communicating with speaking deafs

Malfoyish, read the url again please. She was left out all along after she had her oral method all her life. Thats what I meant by this attitude. I dont agree to force deaf people to speak only all the time since they dont have any respect for this lady who frustrated both world. She does not sign but she speak. She is not quite happy the way hearing people treat her like that. Oral speaking is not the one succeed for many d/Deaf people since we are legally deaf. So be it.

Well Well it s evidence that many d/Deaf people feel this way too. I have never said it s ASL only thing we used every day if u mind. We sign and write in ASL and English as well. Also it goes for Deaf language in other countries. too

ASL is positive side as well as it goes for English language that we can write and read that works very well than just have oral method itself only if you mind.

I can see the way your audist attitude toward me. You dont even care about d/Deaf people s needs. We are not hearing like you if you mind.

ASL is one our true language as well as Your English language is the one for everyone to communicate better than oral speaking itself alone. That can combine between ASL and English language altogether.

For heaven s sake!

Also oral method itself is very limitation toward d/Deaf people because we could not have a long conversation like we Deaf people use ASL. Thats not a wonderful communication with a very short cut conversation with hearing people. we are using it when it s necessary to speak in a very short term. Yea what a waste time for us to sit around and listen for nothing.

Oh, for heaven's sake, indeed!!!!!

For your information, just to clear the air - my "audist" ears are just as deaf as yours. ;) Yes, I have a CI - but when I retire to bed at night - the implant comes off and it's LITERALLY lights-out. I'm no better than you or anyone else here....hearing OR deaf.

I do not have an attitude towards you. I simply disagree with you just as strongly as you disagree with any oral communications whatsoever. I didn't say that ASL wouldn't be beneficial, I'm only saying that it shouldn't be the ONLY option.

Back to the article, any school that mainstreams a deaf student usually has support available to this student (resource room, speech, etc). The student, if he or she was TRULY incapable of holding his or her own in such an environment, WOULD have been enrolled in a deaf school in the first place. This young lady, they apparently had faith that she would speak - and she would adjust. It's certainly not my fault or the fault of people who press for speech training that she didn't.

Oh, 2c dear, you knew it was only a matter of time lol

If I were in your shoes, encourage her to particular Deaf Society. She will realize that American Sign Language is her primary language !

It's not ethical for professionals to try and encourage/force/persuade a certain way of life on their clients. Would you want your interpreter/doctor/lawyer to try and convert you to her religion? Or yell at you because you eat meat, or don't eat meat, or whatever? It's not appropriate for the poster, a student therapist, to do this. Professionals should be neutral, no matter what their opinion is.

If you're friends, then it's a different story.

previously, staff have always been using paper n pen.

She didn't say the patient needed to use paper and pen, she said the staff did.

If she is your patient, it has NOTHING to do with your convenience. If she is as good at communicating orally as you have described, the need for you to use pen and paper or other means is minimal and shouldn’t take up too much of your time, if that is your patient’s preferred method of communication.

mm i believe communication should be two-way. no use penning 'i see', 'okay', 'yes/no' or other short replies which might sound curt to someone who has bothered to articulate further on a topic of concern. on a one-to-one basis, penning paragraphs is no problem unless its a group setting or i'm given time constraints for that particular session.

anyhow my very first post was on suggestions for AAC (alternative augmentative communication) devices which could speed up the pace at which i can convey my thoughts to the patient. not on whether the patient should choose oralism or sign.

Thanks Interpretrator for helping to clear the air!

whendyee,
Sorry if I seemed judgemental in my reply, I was also responding to other comments made by others. You mentioned that your client has good speech, but is she a capable LIP-READER as well? That can make a huge difference in two-way commucation.

As for short responses which may seem "curt", those replies are generally the easiest to understand without the use of pen and paper. Body language and expressions are forms of communication that tend to be universal.

I also agree with Interpretrator in that it is not ethical or professional to encourage or persuade a client to use a certain means of communication. I am sure this is not your intention at all.
