DURANGO, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.

The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.

Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.

The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night."

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.

But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.

She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.

The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

Yes I know I cannot believe those poor girls have to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs over a good heart giving?

Sounds like a case for Judge Ravin' Ravensteve.

Yes, I read about it some time ago. The girls were so sweet to make cookies and gave them away as surprise to their neighbors. This woman indeed has issues! It is a good thing the judge didn't send the girls to jail. :/

I can't believe I am reading this, this lady took it way too personal and the judge gave those two good heart girls a harsh punishment over what they did to their neighbors by baking cookies and etc...That lady needs to relax and have a heart for heaven sake...

To be honest, this lady remind me someone I know from here! :X...

Then you missed this one:

I have teased Ravensteve in the past. He knows it is just friendly teasing, not meanness. He has teased me, too.

A few times I have also had to :nono: Ravensteve, about selling booze to kids and other things. But I keep it civilized.

Honestly, maybe Ravensteve should get his own program like "Extreme Akim" has. He would have plenty of opportunities to vent. ;)

Just like a couple of Old bats in florida called the cops because kids were selling lemonade in their neighborhood and the cops made em shut the stand down because they needed a permit

I cant beleive when I read your post, Cheri!

Oh no, my dear. I cant beleive that the judge took those issue seriously.

Yeah, the US girls baked the heart shape cookies to sell us in the office to improve their pocket money for a first time last year. What a cute. I cant beleive how heartless the neighor is. ***shake the head***

I think it is so stupidest thing I've heard... I've gotten or exchanged food such as cookies with old neighbor, and she didn't take me to court. Same thing as my dad when he's on duty. I've been getting candies from my dad lately, and I don't care. When we were friends, he ate half of a cookie then I ate rest of it, and I don't care.. what wrong with that stupid neighbor who called cops on girls for???? That is so sillyiest and a waste of taxpayers money!!!!

I agree racheleggert, Nobody took me to court either when I did made cookies for my son's class to enjoy during the holidays and I am glad nobody flipped out.

Sometimes It scares me how we don't have that much freedom anymore, since everyone is going out suing everyone now. :Ohno:

no no.. i got a better idea!!.. say: HERE IS A BONE!!

Don’t you know that bones concentrate environmental lead?!? Ravensteve could get lead poisoning from chewing on that bone! Or the bone could sliver and a piece could get stuck in ravensteve’s throat! And then ravensteve will sue, claiming that getting lead poisoning prevented him from getting his hearing back! You gotta think like a lawyer here, zesty.

Yup zesty will get sued. And she becomes a hobo when everything she owns is taken away from her.
