Think Utah deserves it? Nah... no way! Why?
Let me explain you the reasons here...
Florida beat back-to-back #1 teams... Florida plays in the toughest division within the toughest conference in the nation... Florida's loss to Ole Miss is better than every other one-loss team... Don't count OU because we already played them head-to-head at a neutral field in Miami for the BCSCG... so no other one-loss team has that resume.
For USC, If that bothers ol' Petey boy, well, tough. Stop losing to the Stanfords and Oregon States of the world.
As for Utah, sure, great season...a season that wouldn't be without blemish if they replaced Weber State, Utah State, Air Force, UNLV, and San Diego State with some legitimate BCS opponents. They couldn't do it week-in and week-out, let's say, in the SEC or Big 12 conference so Utah couldn't be 13-0 playing in the SEC or Big 12 conference.
-------------------
Florida Beat;
#1 - Alabama (SECCG - neutral field)
#1 - Oklahoma (BCSCG - neutral field)
#4 - LSU (home)
#6 - Georgia (neutral field)
#20 - FSU (away)
#25 - South Carolina (home)
Those were the rankings when the Gators played those teams. Both #1 Alabama and #1 Oklahoma were on a neutral field that Florida played and beat. SEC bowl record was 6-2.
If Utah, USC, Texas or Oklahoma did better than Florida then you need a better argument. USC's schedule was quite weak. Utah didn't play enough ranked teams. No one can compare Utah's schedule to Florida's schedule, it isn't even close... remember that it's indeed tougher to win one every week and out in the SEC conference than it does in the Mountain West Conference (Utah's conference).
All rankings are when the teams were played....
Texas played;
#1 Oklahoma (neutral field)
#6 Oklahoma St. (home)
#7 Texas Tech (away and a loss)
#10 Ohio State (Fiesta Bowl)
#11 Missouri (home)
Texas's one tough loss was the last second touchdown by Texas Tech (away). Texas beat Oklahoma by ten points in the neutral field. Although Texas boldly beat a quite lowly Ohio State by 3 points. Big 12 bowl record was 5-3. Defenses were exposed.
USC beat;
#5 Ohio State (home)
#8 Penn State (Rose Bowl)
#21 Cal (home)
#23 Oregon (home)
USC's one loss was beaten by Oregon State (at their field). But USC's schedule was quite weak. PAC 10 bowl record was 5-0... a surprise, however.
Utah beat;
#4 Alabama (Sugar Bowl)
#12 TCU (home by 3)
#14 Brigham Young (home)
Although they beat Alabama at Sugar Bowl after Florida beat them at SEC championship game. Utah's conference is weaker than B10, B12, PAC10, SEC, etc... check the rest of Utah's opponents; Weber State, Utah State, Air Force, UNLV, and San Diego State... all weak except two fair teams. MWC bowl record was 3-3.
Some sources, which I find interesting, recommend Utah to join PAC 10 conference making PAC 10 a 12 team conference instead of 10 then that would have a gripe argument once they have Utah and Boise State (or BYU) to join. So it could get around the BCS system, supposedly.
----------------
Bowl Teams which the Gators played, it's
ELEVEN, seven SEC teams and four out of conference teams...
1 - *Oklahoma
2 - Alabama
3 - *FSU
4 - South Carolina
5 - Vandy
6 - Georgia
7 - Kentucky
8 - LSU
9 - Ole Miss (a win over Fla)
10 - *Miami
11 - *Hawaii
* - Not SEC teams
-----------------
Also there is another look (check the facts above):
Gators were 6-0 against top 25 teams
Utah were 3-0 against top 25 teams.
Especially in the very last two games, Florida beat two #1 teams, Alabama and Oklahoma so please keep mind on that.
So it's the total and legit reasons why many voters voted Florida as the #1 over Utah. It said aloud enough.
So Utah Utes... despite your excellence win over Alabama alone doesn't cut it here (being #1) coming from a WAC conference. Trust me if there is a grand jury before you and me they would still say it's Florida after all is evaluated in fairness, really.
Therefore lay it to the rest knowing the facts that Florida deserves the honor going along with the BCS system as it is set already. Someday in near future, we may have playoffs come which I really long for, but we need to deal with the BCS system till then.
So Florida is unarguably the National football Champions!
