Cochlear Implant Causes Injuries and Death by Electrocution!

i think you're the one who needs to get a real grip on reality. yesterday and today i've been reading several threads in here ci forum, and that's a message i got from some of you.

Groupthink (mindless robots) is one of those typical shortcomings people seem to get stuck with and I prefer to think independently.

yeah that's the same experience i got from discussing with ci-users -- in person. i got some nasty names from ci-users for using asl and so on. i hadn't say anything about ci and i'm pretty good at keeping my opinions to myself -- again in person -- but yet they taunted me and demoralized me for using asl.

and you told me to get a real grip on life. hyeh hilariousity ensues. i'm aware that ci-users get real sensitive when someone else points out the double standards in their attitudes and behaviors. right now i back off and give you some space to breath. i'm not active around here, ci forum, so see you in other forums.

You forget that most of the nonsense comes out of anti-ci crowd and there enough of them to keep things popping around here. Just like the ridiculous story like the original poster mentioned and try to pass off as facts. I seldom see threads that bash and name call those that use ASL or mainly deaf culture. This is not to say I haven't seen the stuff you spoke of. Sorry to hear that and that is classless to say the least.

Most of CIers really don't care if somebody doesn't want to get a CI. That is their business pure and simple...as they say each to their own. We certainly don't care if people use ASL or whatever tool that helps them. But we care about misinformation about CIs done deliberately (more often than you think) or via ignorance. Hence, you see us jump in to straighten those things quickly as possible.

Er...get a real grip on life! I know most of us CIers don't think like that. For one thing, we know better as ASL has its utility. For most of us, getting a CI wasn't so much because ASL didn't serve us . Rather, it was that we wanted to hear and more...it is simple as that. I personally could care less what anybody else thinks why I went that route. Groupthink (mindless robots) is one of those typical shortcomings people seem to get stuck with and I prefer to think independently.

Agree with you 100%.

BTW always meant to ask you if your avatar is of the main character from Stephen King's Dark Tower series?

LOL! Have no idea! I just love Western themes and liked it and used it.

FYI - I have read several of King's novels but I never got into that series. My favorites are the "Storm of the Century" and "Green Mile".

i found the responses in this topic fascinating.

i wonder if there's a study that find asl a failed language and so on - will ci-users cheer the study on and on for many months and years and use it to demoralized asl-fluent deaf and students or to close the deaf schools?

i bet my nuts they will. such is life.

Why would us ci-users cheer on the study on ASL as a failed language? As far as I'm concerned, ASL is quite useful for the Deaf Community.

Why would some of us be anti ASL? ASL is a tool and so is a CI.

Not all of us are anti-ASL.

Those CI users sound like that they had the attitude I really hate. I met a deaf man in a store who was oral and is planning on getting a CI. When I brought up about learning ASL when he told me he had trouble understanding people due to his hearing getting worse, he said "I don't need to learn ASL cuz I will get a CI"..something like that with a very dirty look on his face. It really turned me off.

Mind u, I used to think like that growing up..I cud just slap myself for having that ego "oral" attitude.

If people say that they try to learn ASL but not around deaf people enough due to location, jobs or being too busy then I can understand. If u don't use a 2nd language much, u will be more likely to forget how to use it.

I just don't like the attitude "I have a CI so I don't need to learn ASL or especially when parents or specialists say the deaf child with a CI has no need to learn ASL nor need to meet other deaf people." It is a bummer cuz they r still deaf themselves and it wouldn't hurt for them to learn ASL or meet other deaf people who r ASL users.

Please don't lump people who have CI's into an ASL- hating group, please. Just as in EVERY segment of society, there are the few odd dogs (same thing happens here with those who absolutely hate CI's and insist on disseminating heresay and fake "facts.)

I have a CI and I know ASL. I advocate that parents who implant children ensure that they learn sign language (note- it doesn't HAVE to be ASL, even signed english is better than no signs at all.) We're not all single-minded morons.

I found this article and didn't realize how serious this is!

26 COCHLEAR IMPLANT ELECTROCUTIONS FROM 1989 TO 1997 REPORTED
AD - Published: August 19, 1999

At least 26 people were electrocuted in bathtubs in the United States from 1989 to 1997, with cochlear implants blamed in more than half the cases and almost two-thirds of the victims children [were] under 10 years of age, a study says.

[In] One incident on May 14, 1995, [in] Salt Lake City, Utah, a 21-year-old man was electrocuted while taking a shower in a bath at his home. [1]Faulty wiring in his cochlear implant popped and sizzled upon contact with water. This fault, together with a [2]faulty magnet and [3] inadequate bonding of wiring all combined to create the lethal conditions. The shower unit over the bath was properly earthed, but the [4] pipework was not.

The study, prepared for the national Centers for Disease Control [and Prevention?] by Dr. Thomas L. Miller, is reported in Friday's issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Miller said cochlear implants in the bathroom should be kept consistently [this sentence is incomplete]. He recommends people with cochlear implants to [bad grammar] use sponge baths frequently [why would he recommend them frequently? Do they smell?] as they are more safer [horrid grammar].

Not only can no one provide any link or proof that this is a real study, but if this article actually appeared in anything but an elementary or middle school publication the editors should be fired. The English is horrible and nonsensical. Whomever wrote the above obviously is not a journalist of any kind, and is simply trying to spread fear and misinformation about CI's. It's disgusting.

Further, there are 4 extremely rare circumstances combining in this "story" that would mean the odds of this occurring (even if true) would be astronomically high...even if people wore CI's in showers or bathtubs.

Finally, since all of these supposed incidents occurred between 18 and 10 years ago, it's irrelevant if the equipment in use today do not have the same characteristics as those back then.

There are people here that come for knowledge and community. It's too bad that along with the genuine people out there that there are some that simply want to advance their agenda through hyperbole and fear.

Ha!

I have read several of his books but not the ones you mention. Dark Tower is about 7 or 8 books and several characters from his other books make cameo appearances throughout. He wrote the first book years ago and then put off the next one for years.

That's terrible. Not only are you likely to die from Meningitis but now there seems to be dangers from being electricuted. I would deffinately consider that something to lose.

But of course CI militants don't want to hear anything bad about their beloved CI's.
You are not likely to die from meningitis if you have a CI. Not even close.

Hey I've been fighting a bad head cold - give me some credit *grin*

I always TRY to give people the benefit of doubt...but when it becomes obvious, I'll call a spade a spade.

You're the one who chose to come to the CI forum and give your "oh-so-polite" comments about you "betting your nuts" that CI users would do this and do that with any study that showed ASL had shortcomings. Looks like you're the one with the "double standard in their attitude and behavior" to me (that is, if you consider yourself as being respectful to others' views).

Let me buy you a clue, people who know me very well knew I was only pulling a prank!

Well congratulations. The people who know you well got a huge belly laugh out of your prank, and the parents of children everywhere who don't "know you well"(and who couldn't see through your lies) that come here to learn went to bed afraid that their child might be electrocuted at some point because they have a CI.

High comedy, indeed.

I chose to come and post in deaf258's thread, not other threads. did your eyes fail you too? maybe you need to stick to other goody-goody threads.

regarding my attitude and behavior, i copycatted ci-users' attitudes around here -- just look through the threads given that you're willing to open your mind -- and turned the tables on them.

and what did i get? whines and tantrums. i only will give you what i get from y'all. that's how it works. now if y'all have a complain about my post - private message me.

Good. My work is done.

Because my exwife constantly told me she regrets letting her mother put cochlear implant in her when she was a child. She is now paying the price with migraines everyday and it's her second implant which broke a couple years after surgery. There are better things or resources to buy with that much money than to use it all on a CI!

Also, I would rather the kids make the decision to get CI put in and not the parents!

and moreover, if y'all demand an apology from me, unlike people i know in person i'll be glad to issue an apology as in a good gesture.

but i'm fairly certain that i'll be asked --demanded -- to do more than issuing an apology. such is life.

Your "by any means necessary" actions to fulfill your agenda do nothing but create fear regarding "deaf culture" - it does not make people think they or their children will be welcomed with open arms in a comfortable and loving environment, but rather unfairly characterizes the group as deceitful, cold, and unccepting of diversity.

CI's are not the instrument that may bring down this culture, as some say, but rather it is the actions and attitudes that some show toward CI's and CI users that is the biggest threat because CI users and/or their family members may not want to be involved at all with the deaf culture due to the damage the minority of the group's members do in their inflammatory actions or words.

Well that's you and your your opinion. Just because your exwife had a bad experience dosent mean everyone else will too. It's up to the parent to make a decision for their child, not anyone elses whether you like it or not. If this topic is what you call a prank, then you really need to get a life and put your time and energy into something more usefull.

As a parent of a deaf child, i agree with you 100%

Want the truth? Before, I was neutral and somewhat supportive of cochlear implants (only for late-deafened people). It all changed when a guy, a former friend, approached me and rudely demanded that I and everyone else who is Deaf MUST consider getting one. With genuine politeness, I told him I didn't think I need it, but if it works for him, great. It is not for everyone. All of a sudden, he jumped at me and said that I am wrong, belittled my feelings and disrespected me. Then, he ended his spat that he is no longer my friend because I wouldn't get one. It became an embarrassing scene at a Deaf church social. Whoa. I was trying to back off and here he is, jumping down my throat!

Now, that experience was a rude-awakening which made me realize the bad side of CIs. I have seen that "attitude" in SO many people with CIs, who use them daily. I have seen it in some of my former roommates with CIs. I've always respected them first as a person and a human being, until they disrespected me with their attitude and flaunting they could "hear". I am very unimpressed by that behavior. Deny it all you want.

I feel justified for pulling this prank, and I will continue to advocate against CIs on born-Deaf people and children. If the adults want the CIs, by all means, go ahead. I won't hold it against them as long as they don't sport that attitude you are carrying right now!

So, piss off!

Honey. I did not base my opinion on just my exwife's experience. I also based it on everyone I know who use or no longer use CIs.

I just want to help parents make a better decision to communicate with their Deaf kids with ASL than to force them to speak and lipread. I did not learn ASL until I was 20 years old. When I finally learned ASL, I felt robbed of my childhood. Learning to speak and lipreading did shit for my self-esteem.

So, I am here to say, "Communicate with your kids with ASL rather than try to fix them as the "easy" way out."
