Yesterday afternoon, my wife, daughter and I met up with another family at a local playground. While there a lady showed up with her children and a golden retriever on a leash. The dog was a 1 1/2 year old male. We pet the dog for a while (my daughter loves dogs). A short time later, another dog showed up. This one was a 2-3 year old Akita-Pitbull mix. I'm sure most here know that a pitbull is a very aggressive dog. The Akite is one of the only breed of dog that can actually kill a pitbull in a fight. So this mix of dog is very big, strong and aggressive. The person walking the dog was an 8 year old girl (if that dog wanted to take off, there is nothing the girl can do to stopit) As soon as I saw that dog, I told my wife to keep an eye on it and we moved the kids away from that dog.
Wouldnt ya know it! Not 5 minutes after that, the two dogs got into a fight.
There were about 25 kids on the playground. No one was trying to break up the two dogs. The lady that owned the golden retriever wa pulling her dog away by yakning on the leash. The akita was aggressively attacking the other dog. The little girl holding the Akita got scared and dropped the leash.
This is where I had to step in. I didnt want the Akite to kill the other dog, escepially in fornt of all of those kids. I also didnt want any kids getting torn up by the dog. No one was trying to stop this, they just stood there yelling at the dogs. So I went over to break it up.
I pushed the goldens head to the left, and put it in a headlock in a manner that it could not bite me. As soon as I did this, he tried to roll over ( a sign of submission of dogs). The akita saw it s chance to attack while I was on the other dog. I kicked the akita in the face very hard. It stunned him and forced him to back off.
After he backed off, now he was pissed at me. As he got ready to come back for a bite, I pulled up the side of my t-shirt to get my pistol (Oh yeah, in case some here do not know I am a poloiceman). I really didnt want to shoot the dog, but it was quickly coming to that.
From the beginning of this incident, I was doing all of this in an effort to break up the fight, and if necessary shoot the dog. I did not want to be forced to shoot the dog in front of kids. The main resaon for this is the fact that kids were everywhere and i didnt want to risk missing the dog and hitting a kid. So the only way I could be in the position to kill the dog is if I was very, very close. Close enough to put the muzzle of the pistol on the dog. Still there is a chacne of the bullet going through the dog and keep goin. SO I had to be able to shoot the dog in a downward angle so the bullet will go into the ground if it went through the dog.
Anyway, back to the pissed off Akita, as it was getting ready to attack, I began to pull my pistol while still holding the golden down. I would have to get bitten to let the dog get close enough to shoot. As I pulled my glock, another dad had the opportunity to grab the leash of the akita.
Thankfully, the man was able to stop the akita from advancing on me and I didnt have to kill a dog infront of my daughter and a bunch of other kids.

Needless to say, I had choice words for the parents of the girl walking the akita.
Fortunately, no one was hurt except the golden had been bit a couple times, (nothing serious) and I bet the akita had one hell of a headache after being kicked in the head with a size 11 combat boot!

You should send that letter in to the N.R.A. letterbag and they can publish your story of what happened in the Armed Citizen section of the NRA publication. Good job !!!!! :) :thumb:

Yikes, I am glad everyone is ok and no one got injured, and that you didn't end up having to shoot the dog. Scary!

I also want to say that the person walking the Akita-Pit mix shouldn't have been a 8 year old girl, it should have been an adult, simply because this is an aggessive breed. A 8 year old is just too small to restrain the dog in such a case like this.

I want to get a small dog someday but am too nervous to get one because there are a lot of pitbulls and other aggressive breeds here where I live, and some people do not keep them on a leash sometimes (THEY SHOULD BE LEASHED AT ALL TIMES!). I am scared that some dumbass will be out walking one of those dogs off the leash and it goes after my dog and rips my dog it to shreds (I have heard horror stories) and I do not think I could take that.

I am not against pit bulls or other breeds at all, but one has to be aware of the aggressive potential that those breeds have for safety reasons.

Oh, Dear God! '

But, thank God, someone was there who knew what the hell they were doing!

I'm glad you were there! But, let me ask.. Are YOU okay? That couldn't have been easy on you... And, how's your daughter? That couldn't be easy on her seeing "Daddy fight a doggie".

I ask you Lillysdad , i thought that if the police officer having off duty or on annual leave from work shouldn't to have carry the gun/pistol .

Bad guys won't give the police a break so really, he is on perpetual duty 24 hours a day beside for example there are 150,000 bad guys pissed off then out of that about let's say 90,000 bad guys he has arrested before might see or recongize him and pull a gun on him. Would you want to not carry a gun off duty for personal protection ? I have seen myself or heard about cops getting shot off duty and the bad guy was so mad and very pissed off once he noticed and realized who that guy was a cop and tried to rip the cop's life apart with bullets. If I was a police officer, I would carry a gun for personal protection too. Politically correct politicans and lawyers will want police to not carry a gun off duty and that is why it is very important to sign petitions and support the police.

wow scary .. glad to hear that all kids are fine and not hurt.. whew!

i know from experiences of pitbulls being aggressive as they tried to attack and kill my two dogs and my moms dog. whew! I wouldnt dream of owning a pitbull not with my son and the animals around. jeez.

Wow.. it is close call... You had to do the best you could...all kids are safer... thank you..

Oceanbreeze- Im fine, my knees are a little skinned up and my shoulder is sore (i have a bad shoulder anyway so Im used to that). Lilly is fine to. When I told my wife to get Lilly out of there, she did. She took Lilly to an area of the playground where they could not see me. Unfortunately, my wife had accepted the fact that sometimes I have to do things. She knows I'll be fine so she didnt even see what I did. While I did my job, she did hers by removing ALilly from the situation.
I later went and made friends with the other dog. he is OK also.

CutiePommie is asking Lillysdad - not you ...

I come from a military and law enforcement family and I know what I am talking about so I explained why then to please sign petitions to support the police and say no to politically correct politicans. I am part of that family and I have had bad guys try to rough me up or try to kill my family who are police officers. Be thankful you do not have to go through what I go through because of my family being in the military / law enforcement. I catch enough hell for it from when I was in school and then in the real world where the bad guys won't give me a break either just because I am family and hang out with the police all the time.

FIrst of all, I would have done the exact same thing.
Thankfully you were there. I cannot believe that people can be
so stupid to walk dogs near a park if they know their dog does NOT get
along well with other dogs. There are bound to be dogs at a park especially if they are family dogs. I hope the owner seriousily takes a good look her dog for leaving it at home next time. As for you, you did the right thing. I had a friend of mine almost got bit by an Ankita. The woman told us it was friendly I was to the side but my friend was right infront of it. It lunghed (spellin?) right for his face. His mom and my mom quickly pulled us both back. His mom yelled at the woman teling her," You said he was friendly???!" She goes oh sometimes... depends.

We walked away totally stunned. I don't allow my girls to pet any dogs now. Because I just feel people are so stupid sometimes when it comes to their pets. I wouldn't want my girls to pay the price of their stupidity.

 WHOA! What a brave policeman you are!!

Didn't know you are a cop!! Thought all the way that you are Lily's Dad!

Wow... Oh yea, I have 7 cousins that are polices of Virginia, and they do wears guns in off duty or undercovered (not acting like cop)....

Cute pommie- As a police officer, we are allowed to carry concealed off duty anywhere in the state that you are a cop in. In fact a few years ago, when Pres Bush created the Homeland security bill, that changed federal law to allow all active duty cops, and retired cops to carry a concealed weapon anywhere in the United States.
I have needed my weapon off duty several times. As Heath said, bad guys never take a day off and they never forget the face of the cop that arrested them. I have had several run ins with bad guys while off duty with my family. The PD that I used to work for required officers to liv ein the city they worked in. Because of that, I used to see bad guys that I locked up all of the time. A few years ago I was at Home Depot with my wife and daughter. I ran into a guy that I arested the week before. I arrested him after he carjacked someone. He also had a pistol with him when I arrested him. As my wife, daughter and I turned down an aisle, I saw him as he saw me. I saw the look on his face as he turned to a friend to point me out. I told my wife to go to the customer service desk and tell them what is going on. After she did that, I moved my shirt back so he could see that I was carrying a gun. I approached him. He made a smart ass comment about knowing what my family looks like. I advised hiim that he is not going to live long enough to do anything to my family if he didnt get the F#$K out of the store. I told him this as I was pulling my weapon out of the holster. He took me very serious and ran out of the store.
Just because I am off duty, that doesnt mean that I can lower my guard. I have dozens of stoies where I have needed my glock off duty.

Nope they can carry their guns at all times.
A Windsor Policeman got killed here a few months go. He was
going to get gas and saw drugs being given/bought.
He went to investigate it, telling them he was police. They
shot him first and he returned fire missing the suspect.

He was DOA when the rescue medics got there.

lillysdad i bet it was scary to deal with 2 dogs in fighting position
thanks god it got in control

...See post # 9 then # 11 then #16 then it went downhill right away because of you guys !!!! Remember it was not me. It was you guys !!!!!!
Regardless of who "started" it, you can do the gentlemanly thing and "end" it by editing out your offensive posts. That would be the mature manly thing to do. I think the creator of this thread would appreciate that.

:applause: :applause: Lily'sDad, I have to say that you are a hero! With your proper training as a policeman, you knew exactly what to do to prevent children and adults from getting hurt or seriously injured. You used great thinking skills, and you acted promptly without losing your nerve. Thank God for people like you who come to the rescue of potential innocent victims. Your family must have been so scared, and I cannot even imagine how scared the 8 year old must have been, especially to let go of the leash. It was very obvious her parent's didn't stop to think that she wouldn't be responsible enough at such a young age, to take care of a dog with the utmost strength. But, needless to say, it was fate for you to be there, and it was your hindsight and training that kept everything there safe!! Kudos to you Lily'sDad. I know policemen don't hear "thank you's" enough, and I truly hope that you received a lot of "thank you's" this day. Great job!!!! :h5:
