This is funny about your dog. I have been telling everyone that my dog is so quiet and never barks. I know she does and I will soon hear her. Hahaha

Very happy for you! That is indeed an awesome start! You'll hear more than "wah wah" soon, I can tell. Welcome back to hearing again! After all you've been through you deserve it!

You voice will calm down. It is a lot like being in a very dim room that suddenly gets flooded with sunlight. Everything is intense. Programs take time to settle in, plus you'll have mappings to keep you tuned up and you'll keep hearing more details with the quality sounding more normal gradually in the months ahead. It was about a month before I really began to love the quality and it just kept evolving over two years.

What kind of dog do you have? Hearing her is definitely something to look forward to! I have a Maltese. He's quite expressive and uses alot of eyes and low level gutteral sounds. I don't hear those when he's on the ground, but if he's more ear level I will. You could almost miss them until he raises his voice. A larger dog doing the same would be more audible, similar to the level of when a human grunts.

Looking forward to hearing about your adventure.

I have a Maltese/Poodle girl named Marley. She has been with me since just before I got sick. She is amazing how she checks on me to see if I am ok. Everyones info is so great, not something you can read in the brochures. I am looking forward to more new sounds tomorrow. Thanks!!!!

Marley sounds awesome! Those small dogs are very smart! The relationship you build with them is profound.

Good night. :) Wake up rested and ready to hear the world.

Activation sucessful. I can tell it will take a lot of work. Definitely sounds like Charlie Browns teacher, WAH WAH WAH My audi said it went very well. She expects me to progress great. The hard part is trying to drown out thr noises that I already have. I was able to lipread easier. I also was quite surprised when the noise I was hearing was my own footsteps. Audi wants me to get books that have tapes so I can listen and follow along. I am totally exhausted now. More news later.

Awesome. My hub first heard our cats meowing and found how cool they did have differntly pitched voices.

awesome that make me jealous i want one. i am glad it work for you :) yeah it going take sometime to adjust.

Glad it went well for you!! It has been 9 years for me, and I still remember the shock of hearing my own breathing, and when I walked out into the lobby, everyone's shoes were squeaking on the shiny floor. The sound of birds chirping drove me nuts. It was overwhelming, now I don't notice the sounds unless I am listening for them.

Keep us posted on your progress!!!

I am home alone today, which is normal. There is no noise in my house!!! I tried watching tv with the CC on, but it has a delay so it is not very helpful. I haven't heard Marley bark yet.haha Hubby is going to the library after work. Hopefully find me some books on tape. Oh wait, Marley just barked. I guess she needs to go out. LOL

go outside, listen for any sounds out there. Traffic, wind, birds, whatever's out there.

I will definitely do this tomorrow. It has been so, so hot here. Tomorrow it is only suppose to be 79 degrees compared to 108 last week. Now that is my type of weather. I am still hearing what sounds like I am in a casino, bells and such. Especially when I first turn on my CI. I am told this will eventually go away. Hubby is home now, when he reads the paper later, I will have him read it out loud.:)

Wish I were there to share ur joy and see first-hand how things are going with you....

yeah everything will definitely sound strange at first. Your brain needs to get used to the CI sound input and make sense of everything, so it'll get better.

Hi, everything is going better then expected. I can carry on a conversation with my hubby, if I am watching his lips and he speaks really slow. Everything still sounds the same, but I am working hard with a lot of listening tools.

I went out today for the first time since my activation. It definitely was an experience, but a good one. It really helps with lipreading. Now, if my family can just remember to talk to me. Their so use to writing things down and texting. I was asked to be the Godmother for my great niece. Gives me a purpose to try hard so maybe I can hear her first word!! My brain is definitely on overload, so I hope I can sleep.

Hi Angel: Glad some of your problems are solved. It will take time to get used to all the sounds that you have missed since becoming deaf.

Aside: one of the strange things that happened just after Implantation was the idea that someone was following me. Just that previously never "heard" my own footsteps!

One piece of advice given by Sunnybrook/Toronto-keep your Implant on all the time for you to get used all the sounds you have missed since becoming deaf. Even if you are alone.

Just takes a lot of time for your brain to "pick up" the new system of your Implant.
Be patient with yourself.

aside: coming up to 5 years since Implantation.

So, how is hearing with CI today?

Any further nano-milestones happening?

Fuzzy

Hi Fuzzy, thanks for asking. I am home alone during the day and live on a very quiet street so there is not a lot of noise. BUT, the phone just rang and I heard it, that was the first time:) My husband recorded some stories, with all the basic words. So I listen to those during the day. I also can hear myself typing. I think I am making some great improvements.
I am not giving up on ASL. I make sure when my hubby and I are talking, we sign as many words as possible. I never want to give that part of myself up.

I hope your migraines get better. I suffer from those too and unfortunately passed them on to one of my daughters.

If you have a TV and a DVD player, watch some movies with captioning on. It helps to hear the voices and read what they are saying to help make that connection.

If you don't have a TV, you can watch free TV programs online, however, I don't think closed captioning is widely available.

yeeessss TV/movies with captions/subtitles, I do a LOT of that! My audie told me it's ok to have the captions on, but to try to do more lipreading than reading captions. uuhh that hasn't really worked out much for me yet, still needing the captions :)

Find a book to read, and read aloud to yourself (or your dog) so you can get used to listening to your own voice.

Make random noise when you can, like when you do the dishes or when you cook or stuff like that. Last night I heard my oven beeping when the timer was done for the first time with the CI. Didn't hear it the first 2 times the oven went off (and I even had my HA on too!), but the 3rd time I heard a "bzzzzz, bzzzzzz, bzzzzz, bzzzz" what was that?! I realized it was the oven beeping at me, it just sounds more like bzzzzz's with my CI.
