CI to be removed outpatient tomorrow.

Med-El Dual array implanted a couple of decades ago. Never provided benefit due to ossification of the cochlea from meningitis.
Sorry to hear that, There are some medical issues that will prevent any help. Ive know a few who had CIs and been 2+ years and they are still working on hearing , Their first took good but the second hasn't been as fast of a learning curve. No 2 Implants or people are alike, what works for one may not work for the other. The implants never stimulate the same exact nerves with either ear ( mine have more bass on one side than the other ) so that shows mappings are always different as well.

Wow! I am sorry your CI implant is giving you a hard time. I hope your surgery will be successful and painless. You plan to re-implant a different brand CI later or just want to take a break?

Not going to re-implant. Hearing loss was due to meningitis so CI's generally don't work for most people that are deafened by meningitis due to ossification of the cochlea.

Since the spiral ganglia neurons have been inactive for decades and also due to severely ossified cochlea, re-implant is not an option.

sad, another CI victim.
True it is sad for those that CI provides no benefit however some are able to benefit. If meningitis is the cause of hearing loss, CI will not have a good chance of providing benefit.

Did you get meningitis vaccine prior to hearing loss? How old were you when you had meningitis? Just wondering.

Glad to hear your surgery went well. Is the pain gone yet?

It is my son that I am talking about. He was 18 months old when he got meningitis and the implant. The procedure to remove it was today. Pain should be gone from surgery in a couple of days. Pain from implant should be gone now that it is out.

Not sure if the implant itself was the source of pain since its stationary, have they checked to see if the ossification wasn't the cause ? There are a few in a group Im in who had to have additional work done, How old is your son now? Hope all went well and nothing more needs to be done.

Oh, my mistake, sorry. No fun to watch your son get sick. It makes sense he can't get another implant. Do you know what type of meningitis your son had? Viral, bacteria, or fungus? Does your son have immune system disorder? Hope he will feel better quicker.

It was no doubt the source of the pain. He pointed directly at it when indicating where it hurts. He is 23 now and everything went well and he is recovering very well. Thanks for the good thoughts.

Thanks for the good thoughts. He had bacterial (pneumococcal meningitis). No immune system disorder. He had a congenital malformation of his left cochlea with CSF leak. Ear infection triggered the meningitis.
