CI Problems

Im not sure what it is yet. But im thinking like someone said maybe the beginning crude map. I hope its that simple. Ive changed out parts, used this controller with that processor and vice versa and both coils on each and even used both rechargeable and disposable batteries. Tried twisting the processor from both controllers and it doesnt cut off untill i move it back to the closed position and then will cut off. and tried moving the coil out of position on my head and it cuts off when it gets too far... but if i move it out of position just a little the magnets will re align themselves. and im using a number 6 magnet so it pretty much stays centered. im hoping its just the starting map. i go back friday to see my audiologist ill see what she says.

on another note.. its working pretty good besides that.. can hear alot ive never heard... can hear the dog when she steps on leaves out in the yard.. it rained yesterday and after i could hear water dripping in the gutter. heard the phone ring while i was in my bedroom and its on the other side of the house.. stuff like that LOL oh and a dog chewing on a rawhide bone is LOUD!

I hope you get it all sorted out when you see your audi. As for the other stuff...it's pretty awesome, isn't it? I heard my cat sneeze the other day, looked down, then realized she was in another room. So many little things that add up to a really big improvement..even with frustration present. It may have problems here and there..but the alternative is so much worse.

:eek2: They gave you number 6?! Jeez, that is WAY too strong for me. Unless if you have very thick hair, you should consider getting a weaker one. If you have the magnet on strong like that, it could potential cause issues with the skin that's over the magnet underneath. The first month, it does feel like your head is swollen, but over time it will get less, then the magnet will start to hurt. I'm surprised that they gave you that strong at first. It's usually 3. I have #2 on after #3 was too strong and my head swelling was down.

Congrats on hearing all the new sounds! :) It gets better once you get better maps.

I started with a number 3 magnet, then moved down to a 2 after I became ill and lost 30 pounds. I ended up losing more weight (I went from 157 down to 127 and from 127 to my current weight of 114) and had my magnet changed yet again to a 1 which is what I've been using for the past several months.

Jeez, No 6 Magnet, I didn't know that it would be that high. Thought there's no 1 to no 5 magnets.

I started with 2 and still is on 2, occassionally i use no 3 if i am playing sport/wearing helmet, my skin do get bit tender after few hours.

when i talked to the surgeon after the surgery he told me that the skin, muscle and tissue on my head was really thick and said i would been a strong magnet. i talked to the audiologist about that and she said the surgeon told her the same and recommended a strong magnet so they special ordered a 6 since they normally DONT keep those in stock. when i went for activation she tried a 5 and it felt weak so she used the 6 and gave me a 5 magnet in my spare coil as a backup. im over due for a haircut anyways i might try the 5 after that and have the 6 as a back up. as far as getting irritated or anything ive not had any problems like that with it. i did notice on the Cochlear website you can only order up to a number 5 magnet.

Jeez ncff07 , u have a VERY strong magnet..

Magnet number 2 , never worked for me..I'm in 4 now , 2 still is falling over..sometimes even the 4 falls , so my solution ? get my hair really short!

as for Char..ha ha ha , etalton is a bit dirty indeed..

I don't have an hearing aid brush , only the broken puff..

A number six magnet is very strong and would be dangerous in the wrong hands like kids swapping magnets maybe. I think that Cochlear does not want to see the magnet advertised only for sepcial reasons and there is no way that users can use a weaker magnet.

Cochlear does not advertise the number 6 magnet due to its' strength. They recommend CI recipients use a number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 magnet instead.

it is really strong. i didnt realize how strong it was untill i was at the station one day showing the CI to a friend and we were over the hood of a truck. i took the magnet out and it flew out of my hands and stuck to the hood with a CLANK. it suprised me! and it was hard to get it loose!

Sorry ncff07 , I HAD to laugh!!!!

I'm a magnet four , and I had my coil stuck to an bus stop pole...LOL but I imagine CI flying out of ur hands..u should videotape it!!! I'd see it just for kicks! no offence meant !!

just an update:

went back for the first mapping after the inital activation yesterday, we went through the tones and stuff and reprogrammed both CI's then we did the testing and after she showed me the results, 70% recognition at 20 db with pre recorded sentences and the other test showed i heard all other tones at right at 20 db accross the board. so its doing really good at 2 weeks after activation. the problem i was having with it cutting out half a second then resuming, ended up being that the external part has to be synced or matched up with the internal part somehow and mine werent. they said that i wasnt the only one that had this problem so they had heard of it before. they did something to them while the CI's were hooked up to their computer and so far it hasnt done it again. ill test my backup CI next week to make sure it does ok too.

and i guess the new mapping helped alot i noticed the background noise isnt as strong and i can hear other things better when there is background noise. and this morning something funny happened... i heard my cat purring! ill say that again. i HEARD my cat purring from 2 feet away and it sounded like a lawn mower running outside very badly!

ncff07,

70% speech recognition 2 weeks post-activation is excellent! Keep up the good work! :D

It might be the coil that is attached from the CI. from the outside. the wires of the coil inside that tube from the CI processor might be all crazy tangled up. I had that happened to me once or twice. And it was pretty hard for me to hear. If you look at it and see if it's bumpy or if you try and hold it, and examine if its straight or lumpy, you can tell.

Or maybe the audi put this new program on the Nucleus called the ADRO. Its suppose to bring softer sounds louder. Or maybe its the Autosensitivity. I never really noticed anything wrong with my CI cutting off. I would talk with your audilogist just in case. Or maybe take some advice here on AD.
