CI Moments

Last night I went to cinema for the first time since I was implanted... to watch Monsters vs Aliens on 3D screen.... it's cartoon (before you ask, I like cartoons!) and because it's 3D there were no subtitles....

I was able to pick out few words and is chuffed with myself!!

It was only few words but it an acheivement in my opinion!

I never realised that Cinema sounds are so much clearer than my own damn TV.

The other day, I decided to get my cat, Barnaby, a collar and tag since I'm starting to let him go outside. I got a nifty collar but it had a bell attached. I wanted to take it off but bell was there permanently. So I put it on him. He took to it well. After 10 minutes, I was going insane cuz Barnaby follows me around and I can hear the damn thing jingling (tried on HA only and I couldn't hear it at ALL). I couldn't stand it anymore and went to my toolbox, pulled out a wire cutter, yanked the collar off Barnaby, and used all my might to cut through the metal bell. Success! No more bell!!!

I just hope no one saw me going after my cat holding a wire cutter and got the wrong idea....

LOL.. thats good one, My cat never have bell on her as she's perified of these damn thing, it doesn't help as she keeps bringing live birds/mouse home!! She has bog standard collar with tiny tag bearing my address.

Dog got tags which rings alot and i take his collar off when we had our walk. I never liked collar on him since it makes his neck bit sore. When we are out walking i can hear him with ease... it is nice to be able to know (with my ear) where he is without having have to constantly keeping on eye on him.

I can't believe I've been unable to hear this until now, but for the first time yesterday I heard my hair rustling against my speech processors. I was watching TV and kept hearing this brushing sound that persisted every time I moved my head. It wasn't until I reached up to touch my hair that I realized what I was hearing. :giggle:

...I would like to be able to do that. I want people to be able to get my attention and automatically look up or turn around when they call my name. Do any of y'all CIers have any suggestions? I get too into stuff like reading something on the computer or am too into a show on the TV and tune it out when someone tries to get my attention. I need to make it an automatic thing to notice that someone is trying to get my attention. It'd make for an awesome CI moment if I could do that.

This is a tough question with no easy answers. There is a relationship between one's ability to understand speech (regardless whether aided or not) and one's ability to notice when somebody is speaking to you when you are not expecting it.

I can remember in my HA days that I wouldn't always notice when somebody was talking to me. Mind you, I could understand speech very well with some lipreading when it wasn't easy to hear (i.e., noisy environments and etc.) Since my CI, I have noticed that I can almost always tell when somebody is talking to me even if they don't say my name. Because I can hear so much better, my brain has shifted in respect to speech by an increase in focus on listening skills. It took about a couple of months after my CI hookup. In fact my lipreading skills have deteriorated to the point that I can't really rely on it anymore. It has gotten to the point that my wife will not attempt to talk to me without my CI on. <sigh!>

About Lipreading ..I still exercise it , use it , I'm a fan of AVT , but I want also to always use my lipreading..

CI moment today ? the rain pattering on my umbrella!!! although I DID was soaked , lol...I was caught in a storm!

sr171 Do keep up your lipreading skills. It is important to use and maintain all of your skills to be able to hear and comprehend language. That was one main reason why I went ahead to get the CI last year, my eyesight is getting weaker and harder to see lips.

Yesterday I head the hail over the cellphone when I called wifey to warn her of storms on the way home. It was LOUD..( both the hail and the wifey ) smile

...

I hear you. Unfortunately, I have totally taken to the dark side. :D

It is very difficult to keep lipreading skills up when one focuses so much on listening skills. The real trouble is that I'm so successful with listening skills that it made it easy for me to spend much less time on lipreading. I have found a direct correlation to the art of listening/understanding speech when I solely focus on that skill. Heck, I can follow German and get some of it and pick out words in Spanish. I'm working on some others and trying to see how far I can push the envelope. This is exciting for me as I never had "normal" hearing.

Same here sr171. I had "normal" hearing until age 2, but I don't remember what that sounds like. I'd like to try learning a foreign language. I already know German, Spanish and French, but would like to see how well I do learning an entirely different language using my CIs only. It has been 14 years since I've been able to hear well enough to understand a foreign language, so it will be interesting to find out what I can do now that I have CIs.

I never knew peeling a banana made a sound. I used to eat bananas all the time as a child. Back then I had mild hearing loss, but don't think I've ever been able to hear the sound of a banana peeling. I'll have to see if I can hear it now with CIs.

I just remembered that I have some bananas in the fridge, so I peeled one, but couldn't hear anything. Oh well.

I recall that sounds from when I had my HAs yet.it was more like a soft ripping..

I had mild hearing loss as a child and used to eat bananas all the time yet I don't remember ever being able to hear one being peeled. Interesting.

I can hear distance thunder and crackling sounds , fun yet a tad skeery. My CI even makes a noise when lighting is nearby.. Anyone else have that experience ?
