CI Dr telling mom she's a bad mother

Why?

She had a son who was born with a rare syndrome which left him deaf and without tastebuds.

Anyway, she was given information about speech therapies and CI and thought is that all? There must be more than this.

And the thought of drilling a hole thru her son's head terrified the sh*t out of her

So she did a research and found there's sign language and thought 'hmm, I'll give that a go'

Then she enrolled into an Auslan class with her 8 month old son in a row. And on that day they leanred signs for colours and stuff. He learned how to sign mom and actually knew the connection between the sign 'mum' and his mother.

That was when she decided to continued Auslan.

Then she went back to the CI doctor and told him she decided not to have him implanted and such.

Suddenly he said "you're a bad mom for not having him implanted and stuff"

She walked out shocked to the bone.

I heard this from a friend who got a personal account from this mom. I was :-o.

I thought she should have slapped his head off his shoulder and report him to whomever's in charge!

But kudos to her for being openminded and determined to give her son everything he needed.

What would you have done if you were told "you're a bad mom" all because you chose to think outside the box?
 
I would have told these people to kiss my ass and to better start educating themselves more!
 
Kudos to this mother for standing up to the medical community. It isn't easy to do. It is much easier to simply do what they tell you to do.
 
What worries me is that if more and more doctors like him starts spawning everywhere with that particular line of thinking and wants to start lobbying a bill that will force deaf children to be implanted against their will.

Or even possibly update child abuse bills that could jail parents if they refuse to have their children implanted.

Can't deny that it is a possibility.
 
Kudos to the mother who had done her research before deciding for a cochlear implant for her son, that's the most important step that hearing parents should done right off the bat.

How dare the Medical Specialist told the mother that she was a bad mother for not going for cochlear implant for her son, where does it say by law that all hearing parents are required to go through cochlear implants for their children.

This is what worries me, they're trying to make profit out of this, and not thinking for the deaf children.

She would have been fully justified (imo) to slap him, tell him that he is extremely unprofessional for judging her decision - as well as for actually using the words "and stuff" to describe something.

I don't see even a slim possibility of either of those things actually becoming law, ever.
 
Yes, it was quite unprofessional of the doctor. Also, a common problem among the doctors is that they receive very little education on deafness in medical school. 20 minutes of it in the entire education they receive is focused on deafness.

You would think that they'll give more when there are 30 million people in the US with hearing loss.

Never say never. It's important to keep up with the politics and the laws. If someone propose such a thing in the congress, people will likely protest against it forcing them to drop it.

Can we have the name and address of the doctor please? Funny how these stories always circulate in one form or the other but with two consistencies: always anti-ci and never any names.

If I were you, I would find this mother and invite her to this AD. I would hope that she would post that experience here.

Come on be serious, what the doctor said was wrong get off your soap dish and think how is the medical community going to get this mom for child abuse. She is going to class, she is learning to communicate with her child. No one is going to accuse her of child abuse and no one is going to force this mom to get an implant.
Mom made an informed choice, good for her. Good for mom to seek out all the information.
 
Look this doctor had no right to tell the mom what he did. What he was suppose to do was to tell the mom about her option. Mom thought about it and went out there to get other information. Which is exactly what I did. Mom made an informed decision just like I did different routes but informed.

There should be a way to report this doctor to someone. Find out his name and I will report. Please give his name.

Come on let's be serious, how is it ever going to be child abuse because you do not implant your child. Although I have implanted children, I would be the first one protesting something like this. It was the mom's decision and she made a great decision for her and her child.

So, you are saying that deaf individuals are incapable of higher thinking and planning? Looks to me like maybe you should have employed some prior to making this post.

You can't report him. He didn't do anything to you. Just thank god this mother didn't fall into the trap. So much for the medical community not putting pressure on parents, huh?
