The California Highway Patrol is being lauded for it's efforts in rescuing a Chihuahua off Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek Friday.

The little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today. We're glad he's safe.

Many twitter users thanked the CHP for saving the small dog. Others wondered where it had shown up from.

I saw that earlier. Such a lucky save! I hope no cruel owner put it there.

I doubt the dog jumped on the barrier that high. Either someone left it there or the CHP picked the dog up from highway and put on the barrier for safety.

Me too. Hope it was an accident.. Poooooor How did chihuahua jump on the curb that high???

That is a super busy highway with sound walls on both sides. Find it hard to believe that poor little dog walked all that way. I think some idiot dropped the dog off there. Maybe they can check all the cameras around there and see how the dog got there. I'm so happy the dog is OK and nice to hear a positive police story for a change.

The shelters in California are horrible , they put dogs down in two days . My sister moved to there with her lack lab and the dog got out by mistake. My sister called the shelter and was told she had 5 days to get her dog. It took my sister 2 days to find someone with a car but it was too late her dog was killed within 2 days . Marty came from a kill shelter in California was shipped 3,000 miles to Massachusetts . And he was sick as hell when I got him.

and owners should stop to breed too much pets so animal shelters are running at max capacity and running out of money.

And vets should stop sticking people with outrageous vet bills. Some people end up giving their pets away b/c they can't afford the vets bills anymore.

:( I felt very sad when I saw that photo. I see many things like this as part of being involved with dogs and with the humane society/shelter and rescues where I am.

But I'm so glad it was another better ending for the little one, we need more of them.

^^^ Yes...

Photos: HAPPY ENDING! Little girls reunited with Charm (aka Freeway)

There’s a Charm-ing ending to the tale of Freeway, the Chihuahua found Friday cowering atop the median on Interstate 680 near Walnut Creek.

The pint-sized pooch was reunited with its owners Thursday at Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez. Two girls and their dad picked up the pup, who turns out to be named Charm. She had been given the temporary name Freeway for obvious reasons.

The dog had escaped from the family’s backyard and somehow survived crossing the nearby highway.

Two CHP motorcycle officers — no, they weren’t named Ponch and John — spotted the terrified pooch while on patrol. One officer lured the frightened dog using a piece of a protein bar. The other officer snapped a photo that soon began to tug at heartstrings across the Internet.
