Childs IEP No Terp for me

I requested a terp for myself for the Child I'm raising First IEP setup. I gave them plenty of notice. And today they say That they can't get me a terp ( CART) for 2 weeks and they will not postpone the meeting tomorrow because they have to have it by June 10th. I'm at lost on what to do. they said that i can refuse the IEP but then i would have to go thru the whole process again in order to get her approved... It took me all year and some Appeals to get her This IEP. She is Bi polar suffers from ADHD and has a detachment disorder. This is nonsense. And Not fair for me to go to a meeting with alot of people there and try to read all there lips.

Do you have documentation when you first asked for an interpreter? An email, anything?
 
I have a letter that i sent to the school board, teacher, princeable ,and The special Education Department ( 2months Ago) Telling them from this point on that i will need an Terp for all future meetings and that involved My Childs IEP or 504 plan. I had a terp for the 2nd IEP appeal meeting. they supplied and when the special ed Teacher called to set up this meeting 2 weeks ago i told her that i needed one. she called back this past week and said the meeting date was still pending depending on the terp. then she calls back and says i'm not getting one.

No, no, no. You contact them and let them know that you have all of the documentation and will be contacting an attorney if this is not straightened out immediately. They are in violation of the law.
 
They called me this morning and told me they resceduled the meeting Tomorrow and what do you know... they found me a terp.Isn't that something...lol... WE will see how tomorrow goes'
 
Ha! I can't understand why Service Providers do not think twice to provide accommodations.

I went for the Meeting and the Terp was there. So everything went well... Your right it is crazy what we have to go thru to get what we need. I had to go to court a few months ago and they had the wrong kind of terp for me. they ended up using the court reporter. it was a short case... but that is still a no no. as she is not certified.
 
Glad they finally agreed for you have terp. They probably thinking trying to get away with it and hoping you back down. Good on you not backing down and they realised that and have to provide terp.

Hmm... sounds a bit fishy.

I wonder if they suddenly realized... "Crap! We forgot to request an interpreter!" and tried to come up with an excuse for it.

Then at the last minute, they managed to find one. ;)

Bet they don't do it to you again!:giggle:

And you are right...that was a no no. You could have demanded that the case be continued until they had a qualified ASL terp present for you.
 
Deb1hd, keep fighting. IN my county, I just ask for the interpreter. And I go behind the doors by asking the terps I know who worked as sign language interpreters if they were contacted by the special education department. Just identify yourself as a deaf parent. That is how I deal when requesting meetings for my kids. It helped to establish rapport with the office aide at your kids' school. The MS and HS actually used the guidance office secretary.
