What do you all think of Stem Cell cure hearing loss?
YouTube - What do you all think of Stem Cell cure hearing loss?
let me correct you there - stem cell will not cure it but it will restore the loss to some degree. Hearing Loss is not an infection that can be cured with pills. Hearing Loss is a physical, biological damage that cannot be cured. It is permanently damage. Stem Cell can repair the damage and restore your hearing to some degree.
I'm sure it is wonderful for those who wants to restore their hearing, sight, spinal cord, etc. It is entirely up to individual. I am fine with my deafness. I do have some hearing left but if it is completely gone, I'm fine with it. I've already coped with it since birth so it's all I know. A hearing restoration by CI/Stem Cell/etc. would not be a significant advantage for me. It would be a significant annoyance for me because I do not know how to cope with noise around me. I just simply shut it off.
I support stem cell research but I do not support such arrogant action in pushing deaf people to get it. I'm not sure why is kokonut calling us out on this issue. Majority of us support each other if one wants to restore their hearing via CI/HA. Many of us do not look down on each other if one wants to get his/her hearing restored. It is just a couple of "Deaf Power" people who ruined it all.
I have to say..............I think that stem cells are prolly only going to be usefull for certain etoilgies of deafness.It was autoimmune disease

It's hard to determine if it's actually the stem cell that improved her hearing or that the autoimmune disorder disappeared on its own. Just because you stopped hearing doesn't mean it's permanent. She said that she lost her hearing last December due to "cold" and it can take several months for hearing to be returned back to normal in rare cases.
I am skeptical at this point and would like to see more controlled cases.

No.
The autoimmune disorder made her deaf, she "lost" cilla hair cells and thus lost her hearing. Stem cells restored her MUCH of her hearing (90% right ear, and 50% left ear from complete deafness). That being said she is a pioneer, and I’m sure with time and refinement her hearing could have been better. Nevertheless I would deem her treatment a success.
@Jiro
Are you saying you are afraid of sound?
erm....you brain will adjust and adapt.
Deafdude is right she was offered CI, but her parents opted for stem cells. Judging by the results they were right. I understand that people dislike change, but it seemed somewhat inevitable. Science and technology will continue to push forward...
I was not born deaf so I can’t say I fully understand what it’s been like..But I think I get the fact that you have your own culture/community and you don’t want to conform, or lose that. But rationally this discovery should be celebrated - a good thing has occurred.
