Charleston is the top city in the world :)

New Orleans is voted #7! Love it here for a change of scenery from the Carolinas. :P

SF now at #5...

Charleston do not have mountains for me to snowboard. Charleston do not have mountains for me to road cycling uphills to burn my calories. Job opportunities for Deaf people? Where is deaf education in Charleston?

I will pass. :cool2:

As of today, one of Des Moines suburbs is supposed to be in the top ten. I didn't bother to check which one. Local news always finds the poll where we come out on top.

But at least we do have a moderate climate.

Job opportunities in SC will be seafood industries, especially on coastal area and a lot of IT jobs.

Sure, there is skiing and snowboarding in Great Smoky Mountain - in TN and NC during wintertime.

SC has deaf school.

Manufacturing, too, such as Boeing and Volvo.

Right to work state.

Only I know they have yummy shrimp & grits for breakfast.

definitely yummy shrimp & grits in Charleston... that was the first time I ever tried shrimp & grits when I visited Charleston a few years ago with a friend. Would love to go back again.

As for jobs in SC... depends on what skills you have... a few places for IT for sure. BCBS has a large presence in Columbia- claims processors, desk support for claims are located there as well as multiple IT departments.

Charleston West Virginia?

Update:

Charleston No. 1 small city in U.S. to visit, Conde Nast Traveler poll says

Conde Nast Traveler readers ranked Charleston the world’s second-best tourist destination last year.

This year, the Holy City didn’t even make the world list.

Here’s why: The travel magazine changed the categories.

“We are always modifying and reinventing the list,” said Sarina Sanandaji, a spokeswoman for Conde Nast Traveler, via email. “This year, we had a record number of responses ... and we’ve added some new categories to reflect the tremendous interest in these awards.”

Charleston wasn’t shut out. It was ranked as the best small city in the U.S., a new category this year. Florence, Italy, came in first for the world’s best cities outside the U.S.

This year, Conde Nast Traveler added categories to distinguish the “best small” and “best big” cities in the U.S. New York City was ranked the best big city. The “best cities in the world” category only included destinations outside the U.S.

As it has in the past, the travel journal painted a colorful picture of Charleston, which had been ranked the No. 1 overall best U.S. city for four years in a row, from 2011 to 2014.

“With its beautiful gardens, vibrantly painted Georgian houses along Rainbow Row, and carriages clacking across cobblestone streets, Charleston remains one of the country’s most picturesque cities,” Conde Nast Traveler says on its website. “Underneath its sleepy charm, the city is known for its dynamic food scene **— where destination dining reflects its English, French and West African roots — along with a thriving theater scene, bustling King Street and historic City Market. Come evening, stroll along The Battery and take it all in.”

The magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards rankings were released Tuesday.

Charleston’s tourism leaders noted, with the new categories, more cities can be included in the rankings. They also applauded Charleston’s own status.

Conde Nast Traveler “made it possible, I guess, for more people to be winners,” said Helen Hill, Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director.

“In one way it’s sad that they broke it out,” she said. “In the other way, I think it’s probably good for the magazine because” more cities can win.

Dan Blumenstock, chairman of the CVB, said in a written statement that getting a No. 1 ranking among U.S. cities for five years in a row “is a testament to the vitality of the Charleston area’s hospitality industry.”

And it’s not just an award. Simon Hudson of the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management at the University of South Carolina said these accolades matter.

“They’re almost critical,” he said. “They’re certainly an important part ... of destination branding.”

Also, people tend to put more trust in feedback from real consumers, Hudson said.

“We’re less trustful of messages sent out by a destination because, of course ... that’s advertising,” he said. “If a consumer says it, it’s going to have a little bit more credibility.”

This award also meshes well with the Holy City, he said.

“I think the award fits well with the image that Charleston already has and wants to portray,” he said.

Charleston had two representatives in the category of 100 best hotels in the world: The Restoration on King was No. 38, and the Wentworth Mansion, owned by Charming Inns, was No. 89.

“We constantly strive to provide our guests with an experience that will long remain a fond memory, and this award, based on their own assessment, tells us we’re succeeding where it counts,” Charming Inns owner Rick Widman in a statement.

The CVB said readers judged locations on arts and culture, friendliness, scenery and sights, restaurants and food accommodations, and shopping and value.

Conde Nast said the results were based on responses from 128,000 readers, the highest number in the 28-year history of the survey.

Charleston is best small city
