How does one change a gas tank? We got a van a few months ago and after getting some bad gas the entire fuel system got trashed. What a bitch! We have been told we need to put a new tank on it...as well as a few other items. It is a 92 Chevy Mark 3. HELP!

Im not sure of that model, what kind of fuel tank. Some fuel tanks are easy to replace, while other are bitch. Also, be aware some fuel tank has fuel pump built in. And depending on where you live. If you live up here in Rochester, then it is hell bitch because often bracket gets rusted, bolt rusted locked. More work, more parts need replace.

Ask Highlander, I think he has better input for you.

Did they say it was it bad gas or a rusty tank that clogged your fuel system? Bad gas wont hurt your tank but they could have been talking about the ethinol in gas causing rust and that could mess things up. Usually just need to clean injectors and replace filter though.

Maybe, depending on where he lives. If it is in West Virginia, you will be less likely to find gas station that offers gas mix with Ethanol. Almost all gas station in WVA refused to add Ethanol on their gas. I think I know why but :-X

If it is truly Ethanol causing problem, then there are lot of parts that needs to be replaced. Many parts can't handle Ethanol, its like acid to some parts like O ring, etc.

Thanks alot EPA! And yes, EPA wants increase from 10% to 15% content. It is going to ruin alot of engines, not just cars, but lawn mower, lawn tractors, weed whackers, chain saw, older motorcycles, and so on.

Maybe they stablized ethanol with some addictives to prevent it from going into acid state?

Siphon Pump - Save on this Siphon Pump at Harbor Freight

Use Fluid Siphon Pump to dump all old gas out first and replace the new fuel filter then fill 1 gal of gasoline and check fuel pressure gauge. It should be around 20 PSI.

Explain to me why you think it's bad tank? It got leak? After dump the old gas out and check fuel if it looks good or not. If no rust or dirty then nothing to wrong with tank.

It doesn't change states it just affects some kinds of rubber. It also attracts moisture, thats why the rust.

Thanks Dude! It does have a fuel pump built in. It is a bitch. While I myself have NEVER had a drivers license or owned a vehicle, me mate does and has...respectively. Frankly, we actually never wanted to own a motorized vehicle. We were kinda forced into purchasing one. We each own an adult trike...much better for the environment and our health. But, we were kinda forced into buying a motorized vehicle.

In any case we have the van and wish to make our way out to New Mexico or Colorado...preferable New Mexico. Need the van for that. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Highlander! (loved that series and the movies too) It is an old tank, but we got bad gas at a station in a town call Grayson, Ky. We got stuck in KY till we get the van fixed. Might be rust though.

There are documented evidence that Trike, motorcycles are worst vehicles for environment. Not many realize that even though they are fuel efficient. The reason for fuel efficient so high is that there is no emission control on them. Add emission control DOES decrease MPG, Im sure Highlander knows this. If your concern about environment and wants higher MPG, then get smart for two which I would NEVER want own one. LOL

Bad gas isn't going to ruin anything. Just pump out the old gas and put in some new. Are you sure that is the problem?

Oops missed your post highlander. This is my thoughts exactly.

I only know what we were told. You could be right. is why i asked for advice. LOL

Do you think that maybe the mechanic told you that it needed fuel tank overhaul because he/she thought you may be an idiot and fall for that gimmick? Try to get 2nd and 3rd opinion. I'm not saying that every mechanic is terrible, but you may have ran into one that wants to rip you off. Don't let anyone do that.

Yup, not all mechanics are honest, I think Highlander is one of honest mechanic. I'm gonna let him deal with my truck if he is closer to me.
