In New Zealand, when people get lost in Mountains, forests, hills etc. If they are missing for days. Cops can use the last time track of network and trace the missing person from there.
To track someone on cellphone is using the nearest network tower.
For instance a four network towers, the phone company will trace down your last move on the computer (when cellphone is still on or last time connected to the network before it went out of range) of the tower then they will try find your location to the nearest tower even if you are no longer connected to the network, it is a guesstimate.
There had to be a good reasons to track. Not doing it secretly to tracks every cellphone users like that researchers studied locations track. *smh*
