If you all are having problems with the captions on YouTube, I may have an answer to that problem.

You see, very recently, I had encountered a problem with a VP software, and I called that VRS provider's Tech Support department, and what they did was install a bunch of software onto my laptop, and that has made the difference in understanding what's being said on a Windows XP laptop.

Why? Because I didn't realize I needed to update my Windows software, which is what they did, along with installing some that I was missing, and you can do that by going to the IE page, and checking for Windows Update, and it'll tell you what needs updating, and you would be advised to install it, as it will make a LOT of difference. Just my view, but what I saw made a world of difference.

You said earlier that you consider yourself almost an expert on computers and you didn't know about windows update!!!!

Windows updates is not the solution to problems with CC on YouTube since Windows has nothing to do with YT'S fu*ked-up CC. It's Google's speech recognition which is malfunctioning. Get it?

That's your opinion. I don't use their voice recognition system-- ever.

Then what problem are you talking about?

Sorry. Should've made that clear. I was referring to what the VRS provider did to my laptop, and you say that Windows Update doesn't make a difference, and I am talking about (CC), not captions. Sorry.

Yes you do. When you were seeing really bad captions, where do you think those came from? They were generated by a voice recognition system. A really bad one. The system "recognizes" the words and converts them (or what it takes them to be) into text - captions.

Crazy Paul is right. It's not an opinion: it's a piece of knowledge he has. This has nothing to do with the operating system. The information is coming to you via your browser, and your OS facilitates you running that program (whatever browser you use) but that's all. The content, including the crappy CC, comes from another source entirely.

If you later saw a video with good captions, that's because either (1) the system happened to have a better time with that particular person's way of speaking etc., or (2) the captions may have been entered by hand. But it definitely had nothing to do with Windows updates or anything else about your operating system.

As far as I know, Windows Update is installed for better security (filling up some holes) most of the times. Usually problems with third-party software can be fixed by uninstall/reinstall (the same or newer version of its software). In case of corrupted or missing files in Windows (OS), your Windows CD will repair it. You already know that?

Yes, most of it was security related. However, I'm thinkng they also installed other software for video quality purposees, because they installed two 135-bit pieces of software, and that totaled 200-something after they were done. It took just over an hour to install it all, and it still didn't help my VP get back up and running, so they installed something else, and BOOM-- it was operational again.

:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2: What was that something else?

Don't remember now, but I DO know they went back to Windows Update, and picked out a certain piece of software, and downloaded that, and sure enough, my VP was working. Since then, I've not had too many problems with it.

Pardon me, you said "Why? Tell me how the hell they did that (installing Windows Update for you). No one can install it except you unless you choose automatic updates. Or you may forget to mention that a tech was at your place to work on your laptop.

Only other way is maybe the tech person was using remote desktop to work on his but I don't think you can update/select Windows updates through remote desktop (it's been a while).

But- I have no idea what in the sam hill the captions on YouTube has anything to do with the problems with the VP issues and software. They are two completely separate animals. YouTube is a standalone thing and the only thing a user HAS to worry about is their video card, how much memory they have and internet speed. As mentioned already, the captioning is through a third party speech recognition process (which really sucks)- the end user can't do anything about it. Same would be true on any other website that is like YouTube and has this kludgey speech recognition software.

My brain hurts now.

They probably updated his flash player. That doesn't have much to do with CC, but if it was out of date, malfunctions can happen.
