I am creating a thread with a few quotes related to the shooting in Arizona.

Source
From AP, a quote from Scott Kelly, Rep Giffords brother in law:
Giffords' brother-in-law, Scott, the commanding officer, spoke over the radio. Flight controllers in Houston fell silent.

"As I look out the window, I see a very beautiful planet that seems very inviting and peaceful," he said. "Unfortunately, it is not."

"These days, we are constantly reminded of the unspeakable acts of violence and damage we can inflict upon one another, not just with our actions, but also with our irresponsible words," he said.

"We're better than this," he said. "We must do better."

Source
From AP, a quote from Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik:
Dupnik believes that the cacophony of talk radio, 24/7 cable news and Internet message boards created an atmosphere that allows violent acts by unstable people to take root.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Dupnik said at a news conference broadcast live nationwide about eight hours after Saturday's shooting.

Now my own feelings on this; at what point do we take a look at each other and say "You know what? We are all in this together. We are brothers and sisters under the Stars and Bars. One nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."

At what point did we all need to decide to be left or right? At what point did we decide that anyone that votes differently is an idiot? Why do people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann have such devoted audiences? Why do we debate politics with such venom?

Interesting but politics has nothing to do with the nutcase killer.

Where should I have put this topic? BTW, I don't agree. I think these political buffoons that fill our airwaves have a lot to do with the attitudes of a lot of subversives that are not yet famous. The quotes are from two people affected by this shooting.

There could be some politics involved in the motives of a young man specifically targeting and shooting am elected congressional representative. This was not a random shooting. He was taxi'd there. Previous statements of disgust with giffords.

Typically, anarchists (which I'm going to pigeon-hole the suspect as for now) dont get much respect as they are not taken seriously. For good reason too: no $. No return on investment. A lot of people who comment on politics do make money. Why listen to someone who wants to mold your worldview and not to have the inconvienece of talking about social problems like an adult? Time? A bigger TV? Gah. I'm slightly pessimistic after all this.

It's more about time and money for the rest of society. I mean how else are you going to sound off to your elected officials? Make more seats?

I'm not trying to group this killer as a Conservative. What I am saying is that these hotheaded media blowhards that stir the anger pot are having a negative effect on the country. Why has the divide between the two parties gotten so huge?

There are more of these guys lurking out there, unknown for now. Someday soon, they will step out from the shadows and attempt to change history.

I don't think you can put the dude in a specific party affiliation because he doesn't match any particular platform remotely close.

I'll watch a bit of fox news or CNN, msnbc and frankly all those sound bites just make people dumber if they're not able to tell what is genuinely unoriginal or to make up their own minds about issues without resorting on evidence by what some dude on tv said.

Welcome to the 60's Part 2.

Welcome to the 60's Part 2.
I remember. There was a song, Abraham, Martin, and John; by Dion...

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.

Only way to tone the rhetoric down is to turn off the programs or donate more time to actually talking to people in your community about issues. Like going to your city council or school board meeting.

I'm not trying to change the world. I am just discouraged at how things are right now.

Damn skippy. I'm still shocked/angry/confused/sad. I just hope we can read about the case later and learn about the circumstances of it. There's so much we don't know.

And I hope people/society recognizes the before/event/after and put things into context. America shouldn't tolerate hate/violence in politics.

Well said.

Meh, my high school teacher once told us about Ireland and her problems with domestic terrorism- IRA- stuff and uh that's the sort of image that he was warning about or telling us what it could look like if we're not very civil towards the other end of the spectrum.

Hey Kid, I think your post is right where it should be..I get your message and I agree fully... You see even here on this site, where we all share something,
there is still radical disagreement. I take what you say one step further..
we are One Spirit, One Earth, One People and I for one realize the importance of my positive contributions...We must become more tolerant of others..and understand that some people are "hounded" by past suffering and injustice...I believe it is thru that pain such anger evolves. I also agree that persons in positions to preach peace or hate, be it the boardroom, talk radio, TV, our many different houses of Worship, classroom or dinner table carry the burden of influence. I pray they all understand one day that this process of Life can be used to learn and bring all of us to a Higher Good.
Miss ya Kid..smile

I am with you! well said, my friend....Today I have a goal, to Live tomorrow's Dream, for my future soul depends on it. Never Surrender to the brokers of hate and dispair....Peace to you..M♥♥♥

Most don't debate they argue with emotions and when emotions begin to become unhinged well then there is violence to follow. Why is there such a divide in the country because the people fuel it. I would like to think and this is just my opinion that politicians could do a better job at finding solid solutions if labels were removed and they didn't have to worry about the voters being down their back and feeling a sense of obligation to with hold whatever "standards" come along with whatever particular party they are affiliated with. But Jefferson summed it up best or at least thats what I think he said

"I tolerate with the utmost latitude the right of others to differ from me in opinion without imputing to them criminality. I know too well the weakness and uncertainty of human reason to wonder at its different results. Both of our political parties, at least the honest part of them, agree conscientiously in the same object--the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that One side...fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove"

Love the Jefferson quote! He was right.

Politicians need to have the voters breath down their backs. What has been the case is that the voters are forced to choose between 2 separate philosophies. There are few politician that will work both sides. Then we have the loudmouths from the right and left calling for more extremism because it makes money for them and the station/network.

I can't recall but I might have contrasted the act of not voting against some other social disconnect. If you can find it, I'll give you like 5 gold stars and a I'll completely acknowledge that whatever I said then was probably true and I'll say something as a hindsight piece to that statement as well. :hmm. I can myself saying that I was probably sketchy about personally voting in CA but I have been voting.
