Business Cards?

I would like to think most people will see, "text only", thanks. Some people will call me, and see they get no answer so they'll text me.

The sad thing is that there are rude, insensitive people everywhere.

When I sell bikes, I'm aware that younger people are more likely to text than older folks. So therefore, I often try to get bikes that caters to my clientele.

As for business card, I've always wanted a business card. I would suppose, roll the dice. If you want to mention that you're deaf and you cannot use voice phone, go for it. You never know, there may be folks who are deaf themselves or know someone who is deaf. You may get more business that way.

Earlier this year, I sold a bike to a Mom of a son who is autistic. I would think that I did a good job selling the bike.

Just as a point of interest, you are aware that not everyone can text, correct? It might take you three seconds, it takes me about an hour and even then, I'm limited.

I've had similar experiences. There's a blonde girl with glasses at the MBTA station in my city. Every time I go to buy T passes, I run the risk of getting her behind the counter, she refuses to use the mic, doesn't come up to where I can hear her, and gets nasty when I ask her to repeat. If it wasn't for the safety glass, I'd grab the little bitch by the throat and slam her face to the glass every time she does this to me. I've sent letters to the MBTA to complain and clearly they couldn't care less about customer service.

I spent a year commuting to Boston - used the machines for my T pass to avoid those people. I totally get it!!! :laugh2:

People shouldn't be that rude or clueless. Do people really need classes on how to speak to the deaf and hearing impaired? IMO, if you're this much of bitch to a customer, you should be stuck cleaning the ladies room all day until you figure it out.

BTW, as a government employee, we get transit vouchers so using the machines isn't an option. Thankfully with my new job being in another state, I'll never have to see this jerk behind the counter again....God willing...

I asked each dr's office to put a note on my folder, in clear view, that I am deaf/HoH.
I do recall one office where everyone noticed the note and mentioned it so I knew they were aware.

I've tried this too, unfortunately instead of speaking up, they yelled at me the whole time. The doctor got a chuckle out of it though and told me, "There's this big note on your folder "talk loud, she's deaf..." :eek3:

Staples will also make business cards for you. I had 50 made this past summer for a show I was working on. I gave them a poster to scan and they made 5 sheets of 10 for $1/sheet plus $2 to cut the sheets for me.

What most hearing people don't realize is that for a Deaf person, having the ability to speak more often than not is more of a curse than a blessing. One of the main reasons is the very one you stated: because you can speak they think you can hear.

I am learning. Taking community college classes with my husband, studying all free lessons @ ASLU on line, and have joined a community group for independent living.

So the short answer. NO/not yet:laugh2:

Hmmm, this is your decision but from my vantage point, I would see it as regressive, as eliminating an option. Best wishes

I think most of times - they would read the card and give it back and probably say - "oh ok...." or "oh I'm sorry"

I'm guessing these people that get embarrassed by you being load don't get out much because the hearing can be very loud. I would just be yourself! if your worried about it ask a friend or your husband to give you a sing when your loud or when your good. That is what my friend and I do.

I also sent you info on CapTel with Smartphone.

Alright, so here's the thing. I'm starting to get afraid to talk because many times in the last year or two, people have commented I am too loud or got embarrassed because I am loud. So now I am afraid I am bellowing whenever I speak.

I have been thinking about CapTel, I have a Sprint account and smart phone. Do you have to be by your computer to read the text? What happens if you are out and about? Can the cell phone translate? My HA oticon (right ear) has a remote that does the same thing as your neck-loop.

It isn't the same issue but I've used cards to help me get through security at airports. It's definitely a good thing to do. (I have PTSD from some past abuse which makes pat-downs and x-ray machines a HUGE panic-inducing issue for me. I shut down completely and can't speak or stop crying and having something that the guards can take and read while I'm blubbering away is a huuuge help.)

An afterthought--maybe they can keep it cliped to the front of your file for future visits :)
 
I'll try to use the STEP method the next time I put something on craigslist. I'll be curious on how it turns out. I bet you would be too.

I just feel like strangers who hear me speak don't get that I cannot hear, even when I tell them. If I just sign a few short sentences to these people then they get "deaf." Once they get "deaf" then I don't have to work to get them turning around to look at me and speak....

Of course am I doing more harm by not educating people that deaf people are capable of speech???

I do not want to be regressive, and I would never consider voice off for family/friends.... It is just new situations that are driving me BATTY! I feel so conspicuous. I am sure it is just my own mental problem!!! :crazy:
