Bush trying to ban same sex marriage...

We're beginning to fight back against the tide of conservatives who want to outlaw gay marriages. I'll name Gavin Newsom as the one who gave the :fu: to Bush and the Religious Right by letting gays get married in San Francisco. The GLBT community is falling heads and heels over and thanking Newsom for standing up for gay rights. Also a semicolon error totally saved the gay marriage progress in San Francisco last Tuesday when the courts turned down 2 petitions from the conservative groups seeking to stop them. Proves that bad English use really made a huge difference

Watch for some nice little tidbits coming out of Texas in a few days that is going to make Bush totally piss in his pants! I will coment more on it as I find out more news from other Dem sources. However I will keep it to myself for a while until it hits the news media.

S.F. Mayor Renews Calls for Gay Marriage Support
Call Comes During Anniversary of 'Winter of Love'
By LISA LEFF, AP[/B]

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 13) - Marking the anniversary of his decision to sanction same-sex marriages, Mayor Gavin Newsom on Saturday urged gay couples to back politicians who support gay marriage, saying it is time "to hold our elected officials accountable."

"It is no longer acceptable for politicians to come to you every election cycle and ask for money and then say, 'It's too much, too soon,"' Newsom told about 3,000 gay and lesbian supporters during a ceremony to remember the anniversary of last year's "Winter of Love," the four-week period when his administration granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The licenses were later voided by the California Supreme Court, which ruled that Newsom had overstepped his authority. A ruling is expected any day on a pair of lawsuits filed by the city and same-sex couples that seek to overturn California's marriage laws.

"He is a hero, especially to be a straight man and to stand up for our rights when he doesn't have to," said Beth McLaughlin, 40, who married her partner last year.

Although the couple was about to leave on an anniversary cruise to Mexico, McLaughlin said they did not hesitate to drive nearly 100 miles to hear the mayor speak at City Hall.

"For him to back us has been awesome, and he has stuck his head out on the chopping block quite a few times," McLaughlin said.

The 37-year-old Democrat is blamed for feeding a conservative rush to the polls in November, when 11 states passed anti-gay marriage amendments. Gay marriage opponents have taken steps to do the same in another 17 states, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

"I've never felt a greater sense of purpose - but beyond anything else, an obligation to finish this job," he said. "We will not back up. I have no regrets."

His "too much, too soon" remarks appeared aimed at Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. The former San Francisco mayor has said Newsom's decision to let gay couples marry played a role in President Bush's re-election and that the gay marriage issue "has been too much, too fast, too soon."

He has recently criticized fellow Democrats for not taking a bolder stance on gay marriage and chastised New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for verbally supporting gay marriage while challenging a February ruling that New York's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

Standing on the grand marble staircase where many of the same-sex weddings took place, Newsom saved his sharpest rhetoric for Bush, who has endorsed amending the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage.

"Don't give up the fight. Don't feel discouraged. Don't listen to the president of the United States," Newsom said to thunderous cheers before leading the crowd in a chant of "Shame on you, George Bush."

German Legalizing Gay and Lesbian Marriage

German Legalizing Gay and Lesbian Marriage

KARLSRUHE, Germany — German same-sex couples are going to qualify for a new range of benefits and rights.

Germany’s highest court has rejected two conservative states’ requests to delay the law.

The Federal Constitutional Court turned down the plea by Bavaria and Saxony for an injunction to prevent the law, pushed by the government to reduce discrimination, taking effect Aug. 1.

Officials from the states had argued that the law breaks constitutional provisions that protect marriage and the family.

The new law would allow gay couples to exchange vows at local Government offices and require a court decision for divorce. Same-sex couples would also receive rights given heterosexual spouses in areas such as inheritance and health insurance.

The law was passed by the center-left majority in the lower house of parliament last year, but in the upper house, where Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s government lacks a majority, representatives voted to withhold some tax privileges granted to heterosexual couples.

Three opposition-ruled states, Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia, lodged complaints over the legislation with the Federal Constitutional Court, which is not expected to deliver a final ruling for several months.

Bavaria and Saxony also demanded that the court also block the measure while it decides.

A Spanish bill allowing gay marriage is expected to go to parliament has the Catholic Church up in arms. One bishop said it was like unleashing a virus. Other European countries already allow some form of gay unions.

When Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took office in April he promised to remove the Catholic Church's influence on Spanish society by easing divorce rules, softening abortion laws and legalizing gay marriage.

It was the last measure that has raised the most resentment with the Church.

The legislation would be like "imposing a virus on society, something false that will have negative consequences for social life," Juan Antonio Martinez Camino, spokesman for the Spanish Bishops Conference, told Spain's National Television.

If the bill passes the cabinet, it will also need to be approved by Spain's parliament before becoming law. The country's previous, conservative government rebuffed several calls to legalize gay marriage during its administration.

Some nations allow gay marriage

Although surveys show nearly half of Spain's population no longer goes to Mass, enactment would still mean a social change in the largely Catholic country, and bring it into the ranks of the mostly northern European countries that permit gay marriage or another legally recognized form of gay union.

In Germany, gay couples have been able to register their relationships since 2001. Over the summer, gay marriage became a nationally debated issue when the leader of the business-friendly Free Democratic Party, Guido Westerwelle, acknowledged his homosexuality in July and called for more equality for gay couples.

Homosexual partners should have the right to adopt any child, not only the legal child of a partner, and receive the same tax status as married couples, Westerwelle said at the time.

A bill extending homosexuals' rights, including the legalization of gay marriage, drafted in June by Germany's ruling Social Democratic-Green party coalition government received sharp criticism from the conservative opposition, and the nation's parliament has not yet taken action on the measure.

I feel that there is nothing wrong with same sex marriage. By having bush say that the reason he doesn't want same sex marriage to be legal in the United States is because it's against our religion, i think is rediculus. Especailly now of days, many people are going against many "rules" in our religion (example: divorce, affairs ect) all of these are in fact against our religion and says so right in the bible, but that is not stopping people from doing them.
My opionion is happiness is the big factor. If being with the same sex and being able to finalize in court makes someone happy, i don't understand why they should stop that. Their are so many worse things going on in the world i don't know why people are spending so much time on trying to forbid same sex marriage.

Same Sex Marriages

I think that same sex marriages should be allowed. I mean why not, if it makes someone happy than why not?? It has no influence on anyone else. I don't understand why anyone would care if people of the same sex want to get married. They're not telling you to marry someone of the same sex, so leave them alone and mind your own business if you don't like it.
