I'm getting married in the summer in NY and my profoundly deaf mum will be coming over from the UK for the wedding. I'm looking for an interpreter who knows BSL (British Sign Language) to help her for the day. She knows a little ASL as she teaches a lot of immigrants to the UK, but she won't be able to go the whole day on it. Looking at older posts here it seems this skill is not easily found in the US.

Could anyone recommend good places to look? I'm completely lost in the US deaf community and google hasn't really helped out so far. Cheers.

which part of NY are you in? so i ll do my best to find some information about the agency in NY.

The wedding is in Washingtonville, Orange County. It's about an hour from NYC. Thanks for looking into it.

Thanks, Frisky. That does help. For some reason I had not really thought about keeping my search regional. I suppose that's what comes from being raised on a small island :)

I just spoke to someone at SignTalk.org and they have some BSL interpreters on their books, so that's a good start. I will enquire at a few more NY agencies and see what comes up.

Thanks again!

No problem. Hope you will find something to start with. If you find one, and let us know. thanks. My sister lives in new paltz there. I love this tiny town! I have not seen washingtonville before. I m curious about this town. ha

You might want to contact RIT/NTID to see if they know of BSL interpreters in the area. That university trains a lot of interpreters. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest, but I don't live in NY, so I wouldn't know too much anyway. Good luck finding a BSL interpreter. I imagine that, in NY, of all places, there might be one.

that is a good idea to contact Rochester to see if they know anything about washingtonville. yeah That is pretty far from rochester to washingtonville.
