I do believe Osama bin Laden took credit for the 1993 WTC bombings, no? So it was a long time before 9/11 that the United States knew this guy made good on his threats. He had the means to do so with his little army and his well stocked arsenal, paid for himself. I do believe Osama bin Laden came from a very wealthy family.

Yes....Supposedly he was the target when Clinton bombed the Pharmaceutical plants

They always have and they always will. I don't think it is a matter of permission to do so.
The military can't do whatever they want. They have standing orders and rules of engagement that they have to follow. They can't go or do anything they want. They have to follow the chain of command in all that they do.

Ever read about Vietnam?

I've not only read about it, I have treated vets suffereing from PTSD as a result.

The issues regarding Vietnam are not about the efficiency of our military, but the fact that administrations made decisions to become involved, and continue involvement, in a civil war that we had no business participating in.:cool2: Dehumanization was rampant as a result. Soldiers were not trained to deal with the conditions and circumstances encountered.

Still not a matter of being given permission. It is a matter of being ordered. Quite different.

That's what I said. They have to follow orders. They can request permission to do specific things but even the requests have to follow the rules.

Then you are simply repeating what my original post was stating.

Thanks for the link.

Just a comment on the comment "[The President] had to make the gutsiest call of any president in memory ..."

Two nuclear bombs on two cities is what I would call a gutsy call ...

wondering if there's any gutsiest call made by a Republican? :)

invading Afghanistan and Iraq? Detaining terrorists at Gitmo and using enhanced military interrogations (that eventually led to the location of OBL)? :dunno:
