Displaced Students Stabbed in Boston
By KEN MAGUIRE, AP

BOSTON (Sept. 14) - Two Loyola University students attending classes at Boston College after their school was shut down by Hurricane Katrina were stabbed on a Boston street early Wednesday morning.

Joseph Vairo, 19, was in serious condition at a hospital after being stabbed twice, Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn said. An unidentified 20-year-old was treated and released.

The students -- among 150 from Loyola and Tulane University who are temporarily attending Boston College -- got into an argument with five men at 1:30 a.m. outside a store, said Officer Mike McCarthy, a Boston police spokesman.

They walked away, but were attacked moments later, McCarthy and Dunn said. McCarthy said there have been no arrests, and that witnesses were being interviewed.

"It's clear that they were the victims here," Dunn said.

Vairo was stabbed "multiple times" in the "left and right chest area," Dunn said. He is originally from Holden, Mass., about 55 miles west of Boston. His condition is stable and improving, Dunn said.

The other student's name was withheld pending notification of his family in Oakland. He suffered lacerations and a broken nose, Dunn said.

It was not immediately known if the students had been in the New Orleans area when Katrina struck. On Sept. 6, they began attending classes at Boston College, one of many schools around the country that reached out to displaced students.

"They have been most grateful for the opportunity to study here while their universities are closed and had been widely embraced by the Boston College community, which is why this random and unusual act of violence is so upsetting," Dunn said.

Loyola, located in Alexandria, La., is closed for the fall semester. The school's Web site said the campus suffered only minor physical damage and will reopen for the spring semester.

A spokeswoman for Loyola could not be immediately reached for comment. After the hurricane, the city of Boston approved an emergency permit to allow Boston College to house 100 displaced students in a building it recently purchased from the Archdiocese of Boston.

I wouldn't judge a city just by one story. Every city of any size will have it's share of problems. Yes, including violence such as described in the article. There are far worst cities than Boston. To make the point further, have you ever been there? I have and it isn't too bad. I just don't like the drivers there but that is neither here nor there.

There is one fact that generally is true....the less congested and populated a place is...the less crime and violence exists. That doesn't mean there isn't any crime. Where you have people, there is always the potential to have crime. I heard of people getting fed up with crime in the big city somewhere and move to a boondock town out in the middle of nowhere and get robbed or even murdered!!! Doesn't happen often but it does happen. To use a nicer phrase than what is normally stated..."Stuff happens".

Miss P,
Why do you always bring negaitve posts??? Bring POSTITIVE posts! We are like    :eek2: :dizzy:

To be very honest here Miss P, every state and city has their share of crimes etc but it doesn't mean it's a bad city....No matter where you go or live, there's always will be something in our area that we may not like ya know.. ;)

We have alot of crimes in Cleveland yet I don't think Cleveland is a bad city, it just the people who lives there don't think twice before commit a crime...

Yeah I did...

me and my mom went to a resturant a block from our inn.
And we ordered some bacon, pancake, and all.

And they didn't give us any bacon..... so we told them that
they didn't give any bacon... and they had bad attitudes...

Next morning, we went back to that same resturant...
and they refused to open up their resturant for us.

Those Boston people are kinda mean.

People are mean to you when you are mean to them. I would say to you that you need to check your own behavior, and see if you did anything to cause a negative reaction in the people you came across. It's called cause and affect.

Miss P, that's your experience. It certainly does not mean that we'd experience the same thing as you had in Boston. I had the BLAST TIME in Boston when I visited there several times. Boston rocks and it is on my list to live in if Nas and I are getting tired of California's fast track lifestyle.

Boston also is so beautiful.

OK, but that doesn't mean that Boston is a bad place. It just means that you view Boston as such. There's a difference.

Yeah, Boston RAWKS...or do you view it as a modern day Sodom and Gommorrah b/c it was the first in the country to have GAY marriage?

Salem Mass was also known for something else, but lets not get started on THAT!

Miss P~ try NYC, D.C., the biggest cities in the u.s. and even small countries, towns, there are tons and tons of rude people.. they defend themselves because the world has gone crazy. You'll get run over if you keep showing your weaknesses, showing your pity.. you're definitely going to get run over. That's why we and the people out there have to stand up for ourselves. Its not just Boston.. its all over the world!

Like Angel, I heard that New York has a lot of rude people there. :) I didn't say ALL, I meant several. :) I know Alex isn't one of them since he's from NY. :thumb:

LOL Katzie. :)

Oh, and Boston Terriers are the state dogs of Massachusettes.....they are loyal, affectionate, friendly little dogs with a tuxedo-like fur. :) If they are that gentle, then the people of Boston like Katzie aren't all that bad. :)

From a fan of Boston Terriers. :)

I love Bawston. That place is so full of historical places, and the academia there is really great (Harvard, MIT, etc). I have had several professors in college from Bawston, and they were extremely stimulating with their courses and discussions. I really learned a lot from them.

If it wasn't for Bawston, would America exist as it does today? No Boston Tea Party? No Battle of Lexington? No Midnight Ride? Would there even be the United States of America? We have Boston to thank for that!

My favourite area of Boston is the North End and also the Quincy Market. Sitting outside in one of those ma and pa Italian Cafés sipping espresso and eating some rich pastry dessert... ahhh, delish!
