Not just because they're annoying but becase they can actually induce seizures upon those whom of are sensitive to rapid flashing of lights. Personally it hurts my freakin eyes every time I see one. :rl: :rl: :rl:

Well, if you are speaking of blinking banners in signature/profiles, you can disable that from showing up on your screen.

As for looking at one, I don't try staring at it.

Aw, I am so sorry. I am glad you brought that up to our attention. Maybe, they will change their signature images/banners to tone down their flashin' or somethin'. Thanks for creatin' this thread.

If you would like to try this - You can go to the User CP (Control Panel) on the top of the page and go to "Edit Options", You will be able to see this - (It is down near the bottom of the "Edit Options" section on the User CP.) When you are on the "Edit Options" section, You will be seeing this -

Visible Post Elements
You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.
Show Signatures
Show Avatars
Show Images (including attached images and images in code) [/QUOTE]

You can disable these options by unchecking those options (the boxes next to it) in order to make AllDeaf much pleasant to you ;) I hope this will help you in a way.

I agree. I disabled the options, and now I can read thru AD much quicker, with less distraction. :)

Great Rant :thumb:

I'm glad that you brought this thread to our attention...

Those blinking banners don't bother me. I try not to use bright colors if I find a banner or signatures. I just use my common sense. ;)

I have a little serect for you all!!! I rarely use that serect on AD, but some site where they got crazy flashing advertising... They are way way way too much. What I'd do? Easy!!! hit that "Stop" button on toolbox of the browser. Viola, it stops flashing. Works 98% of the time!

Erm, sorry if anyone thought I was talking about signatures and avatars(the AD sigs/avs don't bother me at all they're quite amusing in comparsion). I'm talking about the 30x200 advertisements that rapidly blink between black and white. Sorry for the confusion and thanks Diehardbiker.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, only bigger with a faster frame-rate. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6052/ani1wy8.gif

Yes, you can use the "Stop" button on the toolbar of your browser. For example on IE you'd see a paper with red "x" mark in it. Every time these stupid nasty advertising blinking like strobes on any banner on anywhere, not AD cuz it rarely happens here. Always works for me, did you try that yet?

I loathe those blinking bannars - especially the one at Selectsmart.

I actually did a storyboard series for one of my graphic design classes where a whole villiage got together to shoot down the blinking banner. :D

I did use that trick last night, actually. Stumbled across it before I posted here. I wanted to halt the loading cause I was lagging and trying to open another window. I need more ram. :D

Lol@Spektic.

Did you update your browser? If yes, then I am sure that there is a way to disable the banners in your preference. If it is not there, then I recommend you to download a different browser like a firefox. I was told that Firefox is very popular.

I use mozilla. I could probably go around and disable banner/pop-ups. I just wanted to rant how I dislike them. They show up sparringly enough that I don't feel the need to go as far as tinkering with my browsers preferences.

It's kinda silly how people choose to bicker about things but do nothing to change it, no? If we actually spent less time bickering about politics and current issues and spent more time doing something about it, we'd probably have less to bicker about.

I agree with you. I think that animated images should be best left alone to REAL animations... not annoying blinking or sparkling. :)

It doesn't bother me as long it not too much ....

If it still bothers you with the flashing banner, how about if you put a black electric tape on the screen so that it would not interfer your eyes? I hate that, too. I cannot believe how sick some website designers made that way. Actually, I haven't seen the flashing banners for a quite long time - I think my browser blocks it for me.

If you see one, then you try not to come back to the same website. I also probably suggest you to delete all the cookies that are hidden for the banners. I hope that you have written down your usernames and passwords before you delete the cookies.

blinking banners

Actually there is a Section 508 standard for blink rate - however, firefox does a pretty good job of blocking popups - but it seems like some of the ads are getting around the blocker . . .

I dislike ads PERIOD. I don't read them, if the product keeps popping up, I refuse to buy the product.

I find the "new" blinker thing to be very anoying too .... if it is new, put it at the top of the list....

never had a siezure, but I find those flashing banners / ads very very very very annoying. I make sure I never buy anything from them.

In the early 70's (gosh I am old) Charmin toilet paper started with
Mr. Whipple and "dont squeeze the charmin." He was so annoying that in
35 years I have never bought Charmin, I will not allow it in my house and the only thing I ever 'ordered' my wife to do was to never buy charmin.
And now there are all those 'bear bottom' ads with the bears crapping in the woods.....

They run ads that make sales..... so we all need to be sure that no one ever buys stuff from those annoying ads (whatever reason they are annoying).

Even as blinking banners are as bad, worse are these violently animated attention grabbers like the pictures attached.
