If you upgrade your 8700 to OS 4.2, you can use Bluetooth instead of a cable for tethering. OS 4.2 is not always available from all carriers, but the PROXIMUS version (from BBForums) works on Cingular 8700's too...

Also I use Internet Accelerator, Internet Accelerator Download, Web Accelerator, Dial-Up Accelerators (dialup accelerator) to speed up my laptop web browsing by up to 4x -- it compresses the pages to allow faster web browsign.
