i cook everything from scratch, bake my own bread..i rarely fry anything..but i am fat!!!
ive always been fat, it seems.
personally, i am sick of the "war on obesity" because its really just a replacement for the "war against big tobacco" from several years ago...who knows what will be next?
I know how you feel. I have always cooked from scratch, and made our own bread from whole grains that we grind, and we use brown rice instead of white. I used processed foods very little. I used yogurt instead of sour cream. My weight ballooned, and I have inflamed joints and other health problems that made exercising a nightmare. It was a viscious cycle.
Turns out some of us really can't handle the carb-heavy American diet that those of us on lower incomes tend to rely on- potatoes, pasta, grains, starchy root vegetables etc. Then we diet, thinking low-fat is the way to go, the body thinks we're in famine and refuses to let that fat go, so things go from bad to worse.
Fat isn't what causes fat, at least not for some of us. It's excessive carbs, which trigger excessive insulin production. It's the wrong fats (when the government told us to rely on margarine and canola oil, the government was giving deadly advice).
You might want to read some stuff by Gary Taubes, or Wheat Belly, by William Davis.
I've been doing Atkins, with zero additional exercise, and I lost ten pounds in January. I must have lost more in inches, because I had to take in two skirts. I have a long way to go, but my joints hurt much less, too. I also take turmeric for that, and I am not sure which helps more.
