Bilateral Activation

Everything is so much better now. She still doesn't like to put it on right away, but even that is soooo much better. she is now turned up to the optimum MAP and will even watch TV with just the new one on. She says it sounds better, and she is starting to be able to hear a little speech with it (but not close to the other side!) She has her first speech session with it, and the therapist (who has known Miss Kat since she was 2) was amazed at how well she was doing with both CI's. We hadn't seen her for almost a year, and she was AMAZED at how chatty Miss Kat was and how well she could both understand others spoken language and how clear hers was.

yay!
*applause*

Yeah, my friend was implanted as a child (at 2), and he got a 2nd implant when he was...20 or 21. He NEVER wears his second one because it sounds mechanical to him, with a bunch of beeps and such. He's totally deaf, so he's never heard ANYTHING in that ear. I wonder what he'd hear if he stuck with it for 3 weeks like some of you guys said to do.

It's definitely a shock to me when I put on my HAs, I couldn't imagine how it'd be if I had an implant! I'm glad she's doing better and understanding more speech now!

That's why we are continuing. It takes time to understand the signal, and clearly yoour friend's parents made sure he wore the first one, but he gave up on the second.

Yeah, but then I suppose because he's been totally deaf in that ear for more than 20 years, he doesn't really feel motivated to wear the CI if it's just a bunch of beeps to him. I told him it'd get better if he wore it consistently, but no one knows how much he'd actually benefit until he tried, you know?! It's amazing how much he hears with one CI though, compared to my two HAs!

Honestly, that's why we did them while she was young, and tried to do them as close together as possible.

The difference between what she hears with her CI vs. her hearing aid was night and day.

I don't know if maybe back then bilateral CIs were considered more dangerous or something. I don't know his parents' reasons for not going bilateral soon after, but I know he loves his CI. It's a bit irritating really, because he acts like an ignorant hearie sometimes when he has to repeat himself for me and gives up.

He hears SO much better--I think his speech perception without looking was like...90 or 92 percent. With looking, he gets even more. It's crazy!

No one was doing bilaterals more than 5 or so years ago. I was unheard of! Even a hearing aid in the other ear wasn't recommended a few years ago. It's a different world!

Miss Kat scored 96% on her last speech discrimination test (she missed 1), and that is at "quiet speech" levels without lipreading.
