There's a reality show on television called The Biggest Loser.

It's a show where overweight people compete to lose weight.

I've never really watched the show. I've also never paid much attention to what happened on that show.

Lately, I've been overhearing people talking about how they wish they were on that show... but they weren't fat enough. They even mentioned gaining weight so that they could be on that show.

What's your thought on this issue?

Do you think the show is sort of encouraging people to gain weight if they want to be on the show?

I have thought about this show is excellent that show how reality that people change their life from overweight into the fit body which is amazing.

And their appear to be new whole thing. Yet, I don't know if that is bad influence, it just them a hope. Otherwise, I thought myself that there should be new service where they should able to encourage the overweight if they mean to change themselves, not for money.

And I have other thought that when they lose money and receive prize, they have to spent of money to replace new cloths to fit. ha.

They just wanted the money.

Sometimes a trainer show the products to encourage people to buy on that show.

I only saw the series recently, and I enjoyed it a lot. Even though I am not fat, the show motivated me to keep exercising and to keep eating healthy food. I don't think the show is a bad influence though.

It sickens me to know people are willing to gain weight just to become a contestant on the show, but I doubt the producers of the show would simply choose participants solely based on their weight issue.

So, ultimately such people are putting their health at risk, both mentally and physically. I guess they can aim for a Darwin award instead.

I used to watch that show a lot of times but lately, I haven't.

I think the show is a great idea to begin with and it gives them the self confidence, motivation and tips to how to keep the weight off after their transformation.

But if one were to gain weight just so they can get on the show? There's something wrong with the picture because it's not worth risking your health just so you can get the 15 min of fame.

i agree, jolie. i've watched the show before and think it's a good influence in encouraging others to lose weight.

however, if there are people deliberately gaining weight just to be on the show (or they apply as contestants only to receive money), then they have something more to deal with than their weight, imo.

It not appropriate to expose skin, fat, weight to public on TV. That why I watch Baywatch instead.

You guys remember Mr. Bond #5? Pierce Brosnan?

You guys should see how the public and paparazzi is treating his wife, Keely Shaye Smith. I don't want to post her picture because it will feel like I'm trying to ridicule her.
She used to be pretty slim, until she put on a lot of weight now similar to those on this TV show. But the difference is, Pierce still loves her for who she is or so he says.

Slimness is a social norm for a majority of people and it is modifying the way we view the world as.
But I think the overweight problem is globally limited to USA only..
Ever been to Europe or Asia? People are mighty slim there.

My take on the whole thing is that if you're happy with how you are without outside interference, then that's all that counts.

I have seen this show and I really don't need to lose weight at all. I am 45 kilos for 1,52m, so the doctor told me I can lose 2-3 kilos but no more !!

However, when I was under Zyprexa, it would have been useful for me :P

I think that in France, this show would have been impossible to be done : French society isn't prepared to this kind of show.

In France, there is more and more overweight people.

zyprexa and other antipsychotics are well-known for causing weight gain. i've been fortunate. i'm on risperdal (another antipsychotic) and depakote (a mood stabilizer) which also cause weight gain, but during the entire time i've taken them, they haven't caused me to gain weight. i just started taking fluoxetine and will also be taking a small dosage of lithium, so we'll see if all of those meds combined have a negative impact on my weight. i hope not though! at 5'2", i'm 117 pounds and loving it!

There's nothing wrong with getting healthy but the show is having people do it the wrong way for all of the wrong reasons. It's a game show where the goal is to lose points on a scale, not to get healthy. This entirely changes the game plan from "Eat less, healthier, and exercise" to "Fast, and over exercise". Their weight loss plan is unhealthy and liable to cause injury or lose the real impact of an actual healthy lifestyle.

Hi Hear Again
I don't know what feet and pounds mean for me, because in France, we count with the metric system ;)

Her weight is 53kg and 1.57 meters tall - does Europe use meters for height?

Here in USA we really prefer pound (lb.) over other forms of weight. I don't know why, someone just thought it would be easier to measure in terms of fitness I suppose.

When you mentioned French people getting obese.. From a trip that started in London, Madrid, Cannes, ending at Amsterdam, we noticed the public was very different compared to the U.S. However this trip was about 3 years ago so times may have changed. We always joked about how Americanized women were overweight compared to Europeans. Now you've got me thinking.
