Best Deaf Friendly Restaurants

No, I haven't. Do that now.

My bad. Yes, I have seen them. I thought it was interesting, but IL does not have any Indian land around here, and smoking is banned outright in IL.
 
I usually go in to order if I'm alone or if someone is with me I'll have them lean over me and yell to order and they tell me when to drive up ... but as far as being deaf friendly? Long John Silvers ... last time I went in there it was obvious I couldn't hear well cause of the noise and the girl at the register started using ASL for me :D she got my order wrong and after she got it right she give me a few $3 off coupons for future purchases ;) and she kept signing she was sorry ..

Going off topic a little bit.... there's a Chase bank not far from my home that has a teller who's learning ASL, and if I need fluid communication, I'll head to that bank, and things will be all right. Now let's get back to the thread.

My wife (who is also learning ASL) is a teller at a Credit Union and she has several deaf customers who regularly seek her out for the same reason. Also, now that she has regular need to use ASL, she's eager to learn even more.

Did some checking and was surprised that Illinois doesn't appear to have Indian casinos but it does have a number of card rooms which aren't technically casinos and they all may very well ban smoking.
By contrast, California has about 100 card rooms and about 60 Indian casinos. The card rooms here ban smoking but the Indian casinos don't although some of them make a portion of their casinos smoke-free.......
 
referring to the RIT post above-- same with Gallaudet- When I was there--- eons (!!) ago there were some places that were pretty deaf friendly- or tried to be. G&G was one of them-- really loved going there. I also remember a deaf young woman working at the Roy Rogers for a short time- was pretty cool. Now-- I've heard it is a LOT more deaf friendly in that area. Really wish I was a student there again! lol (who knows...hmm).

As for others.. no idea- it's been so long since I've been out on a regular basis. I call it good if the waitstaff are patient and friendly (I tend to point to the item on the menu JUST to be sure they get the right order), and if the lighting is very good.

I could swear there is another deaf owned restaurant somewhere but can't remember offhand. I had thought that Ragin Cajun was closed as he sold the business?
 
You know, it drives me CRAZY when people call them "Indian Casinos." They're not Indians, they don't come from India, they're friggin Native Americans! :roll: I'm not even Native American but man Indians and Native American's are two VERY different ethnicity's! :mad: I have a few Native American friends ( Half or more ) and I could understand why it's so irritating. I can't stand when people hear me speak in Romanian and think I'm speaking Spanish or lump me as Hispanic when I look nothing like a Hispanic person and our languages are completely different! ( I have nothing against Hispanics or anything, I just know I'm Romanian and not Hispanic! ) Now that that's off my chest...

Here in Tampa I know of a few places that are incredibly Deaf friendly. I know most of the Starbucks around here have at least 1 or 2 ASL using employees. ( They're not super fluent but it's nice they try and they get the gist. ) I also know my Chase bank that I use has 3 fluent ASL tellers. There's a chain around here called Cody's ( Best food EVER ) and they really do strive to have someone that knows most languages. I know I have friends that tell me they've had Spanish speaking servers, ASL speaking servers and even an Arabic speaking server! Quite impressive if you ask me, plus as I said... their food is AMAZING! <3

On the bold statements, I thank you for speaking for us, Native Americans. Yes, we are not from India. We are Natives which mean we are born here for many centuries before the white men came to our lands and forcely took our lands away from us. Casinos are to help Native Americans who live on reservation or First Nations so that we can get money almost just like welfare to help us get food and housing. There are other Natives that want to be called "Indian" but that is their preference. They don't understand that. :(

When I was growing up, children are taught about Pilgrims and Indians. So I grew up thinking Indians were Native Americans until I met few Indians and realized that word is confusing for some of us. I'd say the schools have a lot to do with this problem. They use Native Americans as Indians.

That's my experience, too but then political correction/coercion crept in.....
 
Watched an episode of WildWestAlaska and in one segment there was a *cough, cough* Native American elder talking about something and he used the word, "Indian" more than once. :lol:
 
I don't eat out often, but it is good to have that occasional prepared meal some too. Today I got lucky and my subway sandwich was paid for by my mom as a small treat for me and my daughter. This doesn't happen often. The last time we ate out was probably last summer. Every meal since then has either been cooked here at home or was part of a potluck meal.
 
around the world, with Italian cuisine you can not ever go wrong ....

and it is true! many foreigners, not just Americans, arriving in Italy lean, fat and return home :D
