Beis Rivkah High School Students Told To Delete Facebook Profiles
Brooklyn High School Students Told To Delete Facebook Profiles « CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Students at a Jewish high school for girls in Brooklyn have been ordered to delete their Facebook profiles for allegedly violating school policy.

Beis Rivkah High School president Benzion Stock said students signed a contract and knew they weren’t supposed to be on the social networking site.

“In religious communities they don’t want anybody to have the Internet, especially not Facebook,” Stock told 1010 WINS. “They all knew about it before, they were warned about it, they were told about it, they were taught about it and some girls ignored it.”

The ban has apparently been in effect for two years.

Stock said having a Facebook account violates a religious code of modesty.

“It’s not a modest thing for a religious Jewish man or woman to be on,” Stock said.

According to CrownHeights.info, students in the 11th grade with Facebook accounts were taken out of class and told to delete their accounts and pay a $100 fine or face expulsion.

Um...since when does Facebook violate anything? Certainly they would have computers at school which obviously has internet and I bet some of the staff have facebook yet they dont allow students to have facebook as well..what if someone have second or third accounts of facebook anyway? You can never really know. This is kind of stupid and a waste of time. They should focus on something far more serious than this.

the school should mind their own f***ing business.

Except that the students all signed a statement that they AGREED not to participate in social media sites.

This isn't that uncommon, after all a lot of employers have policies against staff/employees having facebook etc. In fact most school districts forbid teachers etc from having facebook accounts - it's because of specific "codes of conduct" that many companies have both on and off the job.

If a school/employer has a policy against something, you sign papers saying you'll follow that policy and then don't - you shouldn't be surprised when you get in trouble for it!

I have to wonder what kind of preparation these students will have when they are out in the real world. There are a many worse things than Facebook and one does not need to be a member of a social network to be exposed to bad things.

It is most probably a private school and they can do this.

They'll survive just fine without Facebook for a few years.

Surprising how Facebook is considered "the real world." :giggle:

It violates that school's policy.

Not necessarily. The students might not be allowed access to the internet at school.

Staff members are adults. Students are not adults. There are lots of things that adults are allowed to do that minor students are not. It's no big deal.

If a person agrees to follow the rules, then he or she should follow the rules. If not, move on to another school that doesn't have the same rules.

Tzniut is the Jewish concept of modesty as used at this private religious school.

It's an important part of being an Orthodox Jew.

If use Facebook for personal only like at home so it is none of school's business to involve.

I rather to enroll at underperforming school with high minorities in NYC over private religious school.

I do not find it surprising that there are decent and modest people in the world and are not "messed up".

It is if the students and parents agree to it. The students signed contracts of agreement with the school. If they don't like the rules they can attend a public school.

Those are the only two choices? Why are you saying that a school with high minorities would be underperforming?

no. he said "underperforming school with high minorities"... in other word - he rather go to crappy ghetto school than private religious school. he did not imply or state that a school with high minorities is mediocre.

rather extreme choice, if you ask me :giggle:

You know the answer to my second question, don't you? I never joined either one of them.

no I don't. as it stated in the article -

Beis Rivkah High School president Benzion Stock said students signed a contract and knew they weren’t supposed to be on the social networking site.

I don't know exactly what they banned but I'm sure it's just about all of it - Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Google+, etc. but if you want to know a specific, ask them. oh wait.... unless they banned email too
