My question is:

Does having a full time job automatically makes you an adult?

Ok....look, let's see.....

Person #1----Works full time job. Brings home $700 after taxes. No side job to earn extra money.

Person #2---Works a part time job. Brings home $300 after taxes. This person makes maybe $600-800 a week on side.

Person #3---NO job. Person is self employed. The person makes $1000-$1500 a week on the side.

So, is person #1 an adult because he/she has a full time job. Person #2 and 3 are not adult because they don't have full time job.

Can anyone explain? I had this argument with someone and we have disagreement. I'm curious what you think.

Don't let the deaf ferrets know you are labeling some people as adults. :)

Being an adult is tough...ya payin yo own bills, that's all it matters.

Adulthood isn't measured in dollars or number of hours worked.

An adult is someone who does the best he or she can with what he has, manages his or her resources in a responsible way, and is aware that he or she is not the center of the universe.

IMO

What is center of the universe? I never heard this words.

If you are under 18 you are restricted to General/PG rating. Over 18 the default setting is Mature/Moderate. For Adult, you need to be over 18 and Verified.

If you are 18 years old who got in trouble with the law, you will be charged as an adult for whatever the crimes you did.

I think that being an adult is more about age. Being responsible is another story, as is being honest, moral, or mature. There are a lot of things in the world that can prevent people from working full time or even at all. It's not for me to judge someone.

I was just having a conversation w/ a friend of mine from high school.

Remember when we were kids and wanted SO badly to grow up, and now that we're here...we come to realize...THIS IS BULLSHIT!

I wanna go back to the days where my mom cooked for me every night, I didn't have to worry about rent/bills/responsibility....and I could sleep in till NOON on a weekend and no one batted an eye.

There are plenty of children working illegally in jobs with adult hours and pennies for pay. No, having a full-time job doesn't make you an adult. But here's what also is necessary...

Having the maturity to know how to treat people, saving and spending your money wisely and not like there's a tree out back growing money, and having impulse control - in money and sex. It's knowing that you don't know everything but feel it's important to learn - and do so by educating yourself. It's allowing others to talk and have different view points without attacking them for not parroting your opinions and beliefs. Adulthood is respecting the laws whether you're watched or not, and taking responsibility for yourself instead of blaming society for your ills, or making working people pay for your TV time because you don't want to get a job. It's far more involved than the type of work you do and how much you earn....

Another bizarre question from you......

"Adult"? Is that the correct word you really want to use?

Don't you mean "responsible" or "mature"?

Like the others say, how many hours your work or how much money you bring home is not an indication of maturity.

Behavior is an indication of maturity.

Take, for example, "Bob", who works 60 hours a week, and brings home just enough to pay his bills and put food on the table. "Joe" lives with his grandmother, does not have a job, and owes people a lot of money.

Does that mean Bob is a responsible adult? Is Joe a lazy, immature bum?

Not necessarily....Bob could be a moron that cannot get along with people. Joe could be an intellectual that cannot find a job.

What is center of the universe? I never heard this words.
A person who believes he is the center of the universe means that he believes everything is about him. That is, other people's well-being, problems, and lives don't concern him unless they impact on his life. Only his own problems, pleasures, and life are important. He expects everyone to cater to his emotional and physical needs. It's all ME, ME, ME. He is the Sun and all other people are the planets revolving around him.

That's interesting to learn about new phrase and I liked your post.

You are defined as an adult when you make wise choices and have your priorities in order... period.

Seen some 18 yr. olds saying..."I'm a grown-ass man"!...I'm 18 !...I can do what I want to do!...So...I say..."well, that's nice...now get ur own place, pay ur own rent and utility bills, drive ur own car."....

And don't feel just because someone works a full time job is actually an adult...all depends upon the maturity level...may 40 yr. olds act like teenagers....so if you can stand on your own 2 feet, take care of your own business, you might be an adult, but some people still are not smarter than a 5th grader.

Do you notice that most high school kids think that life is too easy or think that real world is NOTHING to themselves?

RR...lol
I almost spit soda out my nose... Just before I was injured on the job we hired a new guy, probly in his 50's ...
I have been painting professionally 15 years, he comes in claiming he is a 30 year painter but basically just slopped paint everywhere ( he couldnt paint and claimed to have his own business ) well my boss started questioning him about his 30 years and turned out he was just a wanna be, and his favorite saying was... you guessed it.... Imma GrownAss Man ! Now this is inner city so you can imagine the effort put into him saying this 1000 times a day and included in just about every sentence he used... That is no joke. Yes, he was a grown ass man and thats about it.

Sometimes, yes.....An example is my 21 yr. old...once he became 18, he didn't want to go to school, (Community college or training center)....wanted to get a job (any job) and "be his own man."....So he went that route....and 6 months later, he says..."I want to go back to school, I wish I had done that."....

Seems he's gotten "fed up" with a low paying job and not furthering his education......He's having to get up every AM at 5am for work and the same ol' same ol' everyday routine on his lousy, low paying job.....(his own words).

They don't realize how hard it is out in the world until they try it themselves....However I do remind him that he's a "grown-ass man" now...of legal age.

Until their ass is handed to them on a silver platter.

When I was graduating everyone was getting cars from their parents so I asked mine... Dad said: Get a Job !
My first vehicle was a $50 motorcycle, took me to school and work. I didnt get a car for a few more years yet walked and rode a bike weather permitting until I was 21 and got my first car... life wasnt an easy route as the rich kids...lol
