Bartender gets $10,000 tip on $26 tab
Thu Aug 31, 4:12 AM ET

Two weeks ago, one of Cindy Kienow's regular customers left her a $100 tip on a tab that wasn't even half that. This week, he added a couple of zeros.

Kienow, a bartender at Applebee's, got a $10,000 tip from the man — for a $26 meal — on Sunday.

"I couldn't move," Kienow said. "I didn't know what to say. He said, `This will buy you something kind of nice, huh?' And I said, `Yeah, it will.'"

Kienow said the man, whom company officials have declined to name, comes in several times a month and eats at the end of the bar. He has always tipped well, she said, usually leaving $15 on a $30 tab.

Then came the $100 tip, followed by the real shocker.

"He usually signs his ticket and flips it upside down," said Kienow, 35, who has worked at the restaurant for eight years. "But this time, he had it right-side up and said `I want you to know this is not a joke.'"

It's not, company officials agreed.

"This is a great deal for us and a great deal for Cindy," said Rhodri McNee, vice president of operations for JS Enterprises, the owner of the Hutchinson Applebee's. "We did have a guest leave this tip on a credit card, and we're doing everything to make sure it's a valid charge."

The company is in the final stages of verifying the tip, McNee said, while also working to maintain the customer's privacy and make sure the money goes through the proper channels to get to Kienow.

"Nothing would make us happier than to present her with that check," McNee said. "She's been with us for eight years, and she's a great employee who does a great job."

Kienow said that while she always talks with the man when he comes in — usually about current events or the weather — she can't think of anything that would have prompted the huge tip.

"I've been waiting on him for about three years," Kienow said. "We'd just talk across the bar he's a really nice guy. I hope he comes back in so I can tell him thank you, because the other day I was kind of dumbfounded."

Kienow, whose father will have to take some time off work for surgery on both of his knees, said she hasn't decided what to do with the money.

"I'd like to take care of my parents, since they always took care of me," she said. "But I feel like he wanted me to buy something for myself, and there's a Jeep that I've had my eye on for a while."

She Should had Kept Quiet!!!!!Now the IRS KNOWS what a stupid person to go to the press say i got a $10,000 Tip.If Someone tip me $10,000 I keep Quiet and lie to the IRS.

Sweet! Now that tip will help the waitress in the long run! I wish it was me, haha! Bowak is right, She's lucky that she doesn't have to split it with the crew. I used to work at O'Charley's for a while and usually when I get the tips, They don't normally ask me to split my tips with others but I do know that some restaurants do it one way or other.

i wonder if she gets to keep it all herself. my friend works at a restaurant and the tips are totalled at the end of the night and then split between everyone. wonder if applebees is that way too.

Theres a thing on your IRS forum it says "Tips etc" And you gotta report em.Its Very Easy to lie on your tax return on tips.No one really keeps a record on your tips not even your boss knows. But when you tell it to a reporter HOW DUMB CAN YOU GET?

Obviously this gentleman really appreciated all the kindness this server Cindy showed to this customer, for several years of great service. I am sure the company is aware of the IRS and will follow the rules accordingly. But, please, refrain from insults! That is not why this thread was started. It was started to share a story of interest. Using the word "dumb" does not fall under any categories of Alldeaf. Please be kind in how you state your remarks.
Thank you!!!

Coda,,,The Word Dumb means stupid...Its a cruel world out there. And Society isnt gonna give an inch for you.Just like i learned from Evans on TV show ""Good Times"" all about Dr Martin Luther Kings speeches are bullshit.Evans Said'''' Its A Tough world out there and theres not a damn thing we can do about it"""" And Hes right.Society isnt going give you lift..So Why should we play fair if society isnt gonna play fair? Its like this..You can walk right in sears and Ask for a Job..But They still aint gionna give you a job even you beg down on your knees and ask em for a job.If youre Quilfied youll get it if youre not youre not gonna get that job.Nothing is fair,,NOT EVEN WASHINGTON IS FAIR!! So WHY SHOULD I PLAY FAIR?

I used to work at Applebees and all credit card tips are entered into the computer so all credit card tips will be reported there is no way around that.

Uh. Sometimes people use their credit card to give a tip. I have done this tons of times with my card, quite useful when I don't have cash on me for tips. That will be tracked, there will be a paper trail. (reciepts, etc)

the article says she's a bartender and I am guessing she's the only bartender on that shift so she keep all of the tips on her shift.

yes, you are correct but just waiter/ess and busboys Cooks don't get theirs though since they are paid higher than the waiter/ess. Tips for bartenders are separated from tips for waiter/ess and busboys. That's what I am told.
