Bacteria chows down on remaining oil spill in Gulf

We can only do so much. Nature has to do the rest/most of the work

how much of total population in the UNITED STATES sacrificed their time to clean up?

*ahem* I need to speak for myself, I'll have to go there first before I can argue further.

Well, there's a reason oil companies are relegated to drilling 5,000 feet in dangerous seas but it is political so I shall leave it at that.

I've got it

Listen to yourselves bickering about how nature can recover by themselves or not, political reputation and what they should be doing..

We should be going out there, asking deep waters professionals to VOLUNTEER their expertise help to clean up, REQUESTING BP to do more by providing the EQUIPMENT for them to use to clean up the oil from underwater.

Why are we arguing so much about USELESS controversy that doesn't go anywhere?

From all accounts BP just quit, practically. We will see what happens.

What the hell is a oil-eating bacteria? That's some bullcrap I've heard from the media or something. The oil companies are seriously hiding something so we can just sit back and let them do their job. I don't buy that story, Im sorry.

clean up? what clean up? and how?

they're blocked by BP goonie squads

First, I will need to go to deep diving school.

Second I will need to research what must be done to clean up underwater.

Third finding equipment necessary to clean up underwater.

Finally, go underwater to the NEAREST oil spill to the United State shore, and start cleaning up. Stop when I get too old or that oil is completely cleaned out.

There are "extremophile" bacteria that can survive in harsh environments. There are untold number of bacteria types that are able survive on a variety of energy sources, including oil. Remember, bacteria is one of the oldest species around spanning hundreds of millions of years. My work in contaminant hydrogeology shows that there are indeed advantageous bacteria that can survive and "eat" a variety of contaminants out there. So, no. It's not bs.

Why can't they seed the waters with more of these bacteria?

Scientists are actually doing that elsewhere in a similar situation by using biological organisms to help clean up contaminants. For example, in one example scientists have learned that certain land plants have the ability to uptake certain contaminants and store them in their fibrous leaves. The scientists took advantage of that in an actual underground spill, grew the plants over the contaminated site. And cut the plants after a certain length of time while others continue to grow uptaking the contaminants from the surrounding soil. The leaves or stalks were then collected as a hazardous material and thusly disposed of properly.

Well, the scientists, as in the link I provided, are learning how these microbes work and behave. Until they understand how such an organism works and how it may impact the ecosystem (good or bad) then they might use those microbes as an effective decontaminant. This is all relatively new stuff for them.
