7-Month-Old In Serious Condition After Being Hit By Bullet From Rifle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 7-month-old boy remains hospitalized Wednesday after being hit by a bullet from an assault rifle while in a room at a Westside motel.

According to state attorney's office, the shot was accidentally discharged from an AK-47 just before 3 a.m. at the Super 8 Motel on Youngerman Circle.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told Channel 4 that the bullet grazed the baby's chest and struck his arm.

The boy was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The boy's parents, Justin Satterfield, 25, and Brandy Purvis, 24, were arrested and charged with child abuse. Satterfield was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said the two were fighting over the gun when it accidentally went off.

Lashon Ames, a motel guest staying next door to where the shooting happened, said he heard arguing in the room and then a single shot and called 911 while his friend rushed to tend to the injured child.

"When I come out of my room, there's a baby laying on the floor with a hole in his arm," Ames said. "So, within 10 seconds later, I see this baby laying here on the concrete, and the mom's over top of the baby. So we suggest making a tourniquet to stop the blood from flowing, and probably within two to three minutes the paramedics pulled up, grabbed the baby and took him off."

A Department of Children and Families spokesman said the child will be given to protective services after it is released from the hospital.

Satterfield is being held at the Duval County Jail with bond set at $400,000. Purvis' bond is set at $250,000.

WTF? What were they doing with an AK-47 in the first place?

Hopefully, they will never get the baby back.

Same here. I'm thinking the parents need to just go ahead and remove themselves from the human gene pool, it can only get worse from here it seems.

That's damn parent problem, not gun problem.

Please support 2nd Amendment.

You're right.

The guy was a convicted felon, therefore had lost his right to own a gun.

My former Russian Teacher's husband got shot in the eye, the bullet went through his eye and head by chechen's ak-47. (Russians war against Chechens) and he is still alive, and has ugly scar in the back of his head. He cover his eye with "pirate eye". Ouch!

Idiot gun owner don't put a safety lock and unload on the gun.

Who care about scar as he still alive.

I thought AK-47s were banned here in the states for civilian use anyways. The child will be lucky to live and to keep his arm.

Again it's stupid people + deadly firearms = really bad results.

This motel is notorious for drug and dealers. So I'm feeling it was somewhat drug related by them being there....

Saw the parents on the news tonight, the wife/gf trying to hide her face and the husband/bf sort of "smirking" at the wife/gf.....

The baby is still at Shands Hospital.....It really blows my mind that something like this could happen to a 7-month old baby!

nope. it's legal. Clinton's Assault Weapon ban expired and Bush didn't renew it. Obama didn't sign it either. whew!!!!

Depends on the ammo. If it was Army issue, the arm would be gone. Yeah, AK-47 wounds are horrendous: I have heard stories about them from Vietnam veterans.
As an offside, M-16 wounds were killer as well. The bullet was designed to tumble when it hit a twig or any slight obstacle in its path: that way, one bullet could cut a body in half. Yikes.

I recalled from a while ago. I saw the picture of trajectory of M-16 and AK-47 round thru gell.

M-16 is a little more clean cut thru. AK-47 is however messy since its trajectory path is erratic which means... nasty wound...

When I saw the heading, the first thing I thought... is it in my old hometown Detroit? It could've happened in Detroit.
I hope the kid get to live and keep his arm.
