Autism is growing rapidly

Why is it impossible to have both? It's kind of funny......when I first met him, I really thought he was schienzophernic......I mean I'm pretty odd myself and do deal with mental illness, but this guy is just beyond whacked out.

One thing is that we are now diagnosing a broader range of symptoms as being autistic. Also parents and doctors are more aware of it. There may be an increase, but it also may be that to many went undiagnosed before.
Good point. I have 1 friend who went undiagnosed, but I swear he has it because he is almost exactly like me symptom-wise.

And I have a couple of friends who have been just diagnosed with it at a late age, even though people who have it are born with it.

*BUZZ* WRONG!!

Deafdyke is right--I have a friend who was diagnosed with both. When he's not having a psychotic episode, he's very autistic.

No.

One of my friends that has the obvious autistic signs, he is also schizoaffective. So, yes, it is possible.

I want to say there are many disabilities/mental illnesses that can go hand in hand.

Maybe, it isn't an increase... but better recognition. They are now noticing other levels of autism and that increases the numbers.

My son we thought was austitic due to the way he behaved like crawl in circles.. play with favorite toy teething ring for hours like 4 hours straight without stopping.. finally was toilet trained when he was 3~!!! then later when he finally learned to walk at 19 months.. he walked back n forth in hallway then in circles.. it was hard to make him stop.. he would threw fits and scream loudly.. drinking then spit them out and let it flow over his mouth, chin onto his clothes then on carpet.. over and over.. sand over his hairs to feel them.. he hate wearing jeans??(still to this day he HATE jeans still!!!) very picky about foods. he didnt smile or laugh .. didnt look in eyes.. that was when we were living in the apartment in town..kept repeating things over and over.. talk loudly.. like an elmo. then my mom got sick.. we moved back home to help my mom out.. 6 months later.. would u know that my son have improved so much since? why?? its lead that poisoned him to behave like austitic person would? since then he is doing well in school and etc.. now they said he have sensory integratrion disorder but new term is now called Sensory processing disorder. I still think he WAS austitic. most people who are austitic usually have SPD included? as they have problems with feeling and touching. so made sense??

obivously my son cant be near lead as it would make him go crazy.. so far hes doing well.. and i am so proud of him! :)
