Based on my experience-_Sunnybrook/Toronto-the decision re my Cochlear Implant was made by me by starting the process. Did I fit the criteria here in Ontario? Extensive review of all my medical records-St Michaels ENT clinic/Toronto/Cdn hearing Society/Toronto plus Sunnybrook's review of the sessions there. The SURGEON in the end says" you fit the criteria or you don't". I did. The surgeon was Dr J Chen and June 20, 2007 was decision day. Operation was July 12, 2007.
The personal opinion of the audi re DEAFNESS is irrelevant.
OHIP-Ont Health Insurance Plan covers the entire cost which I assume is similar to NHS of the U K.
What other countries/states do/cover is not part of this discussion
More facts: Sunnybrook: 19 year period: 60% of person sent to them are REJECTED for one reason or other. In the same time frame 850 person were Implanted. I was one. This info given last year at Cochlear Implant patients meeting. Here in Ontario there are 3 centers:Ottawa, London and Toronto. adults
