At What Age Do you think a ...

ASAP for hearing aid
18 years for ci cos then its YOUR CHOICE

What's the point of using HAs for 18 years and delaying providing CI, if someone doesn't benefit from HAs at all?

right to choose

sorry but its about the RIGHT TO CHOOSE. alot of people wish they were NOT oral.

hey am i an avt fucked up mess. and wish every day that my lack of speech(capd) wasnt just put down to my cp.

and if the child is not oral manuel has to come next right?

Research doesn't bare out that statement. Earlier is better for all amplification.

No need to use such bad language when responding, we're all only expressing our opinions.

Some kids have acquired excellent speech by being implanted with CI. I have severe hearing loss and have always done OK with HAs, but if my hearing loss had been profound I would have been pleased if my parents had chosen a CI for me.

Besides, I get the impression from your posts that you have only a mild hearing loss and don't have much experience in the matter any way!

Oi... Can we not turn this into another CI debate? Because it always end up in a disagreement in matter of philosophical ideals that has been going on since the times of the Enlightenment.

I don't wish that.... infact I'm glad that I'm Oral....

I haven't met anyone who wishes they're not Oral... instead they all have adapted the ASL as their Second Lang like I did.

So.... where did u get the fact that lots of people wish they're not oral?

I was brought up oral. I am glad to have been brought up in this way. BSL Is my 2nd language. This (BSL)is the language I prefer to use with deaf friends, even those who are oral.

I wish that I wasnt raised oral-only.

There is ASL. What's wrong with ASL?

Did you not have a choice?
I was brought up orally, but sign language was still in my life. Via school friends and teachers. Teachers did sign to us a bit even though we was in an oral class.

There is nothing wrong with ASL or BSL. But the CI is also a chance for children to improve hearing skills

I love ASL, and my daughter will use it everyday for the rest of her life.

But what is wrong with giving access and emphasis to the language of the family and 99% of the world?

Let's get this thread back on track...

I was fitted with HAs when I was 7. I hated them when I was younger and they never really helped. I must have gone through 7-8 different kinds of aids during my life because the audies were always trying to find one that would work for my loss. Meh. Now I wear them everyday all day long. They still don't help a whole lot, but they're better than nothing.

No, I didn't. I wasn't allowed to be exposed to ASL for fear it wouldn't allow me to function "normally".

Ok, TheWriteAlex...will get back on topic. :)

It would had made my life easier with my dad! He got mad when I did not answer him when he called me , I would then get hit by him!!
I know what you mean about people thinking a HA is going to made eveything better! My family still does not understand that I hear them but not always understand what being said!

actually, they still get mad. especially when you are young and you can't make out the sounds you hear with your hearing aids. I still can't hear people calling me, both hearing aids and CI . It's hard to distinguish the sound

Your dad should have been more patience.

same here. although I'm not sure it was forbidden, but I do know that no one would teach me or did it around me.
