child should get their first hearing aid?

I told a 'hearing' friend that I knew all my life I got my first hearing aid when I was seven years old. And my friend said "she did not realize
I got my first hearing aid so young!! I told her "no, I got it late! " I had already stayed back in first grade and was still not ready for second grade!
It was in 1953 when I got my first HA , I know babies have hearing tests very young now. Do you think 7 years old is a young age for your first HA?
I disagree with my friend!

I think your friend is very wrong. They fit babies at three months now. And they get a lot of benefit to learn the sounds young if they are capable.

Thanks, Bottesini! I think my friend is wrong to and I was really shocked that what she said!! She know what my life what like growning up !

My dad says I got HAs at 1 year, but at 4 months they suspected I was deaf. The ABR confirmed this and I was fitted with HAs with maximum volume/gains. The volume dial was on a 3 which was as high as itll go without feedback.

I've heard of kids as young as 6-8 weeks old getting aids. There kids getting CI's by 8 months, and that is AFTER a trial of hearing aids.

That's right. I know some people who got BTE hearing aids when they were a few months old. Of course, they had to buy new ear molds more often since they grow fast!

I think I got a box hearing aid at age 2. I do not know what's it called for box hearing aid. I finally got BTE hearing aids when i was about 9.

I was 6, so I understand how you feel. But I hated wearing them as they made everything too loud, so I didn't willingly wear them til I got digital aids 3 years ago.

As soon as possible, when their deafness is picked up. I wore my first box hearing aids and heard for the first time at 14 months, I was diagnosed at 9 months.

Got fitted with HAs at 7 months.

Thanks everyone! I will have to let my friend know this! I guess hearing people will never really understand what it like to be deaf or HOH!! I know I wish I got my first HA way before I was 7 years old! My life would had been a lot easier! I think it is better to get a HA as soon as possible so you do not have a hard time getting use to strange sounds! I was shocked at how loud a paper bag was! It took me awhile to get use to some sounds .

My life wasnt easy despite being fitted with HAs. It gave people the false sense that I could understand them at all times when I really didnt. It lead to years of frustrations, misunderstandings, and eventually isolation among friends, family, and peers.

It would had made my life easier with my dad! He got mad when I did not answer him when he called me , I would then get hit by him!!
I know what you mean about people thinking a HA is going to made eveything better! My family still does not understand that I hear them but not always understand what being said!

Why you keep replying to philosophical ideas with hard science?

Studies show that the longer a person stay in the education system, the more receptive they are learning new languages, new technology and so on, yet many people halt education around middle school or don't send their kids to colleges despite that research.

Education is everything to me. Hearing is not. I am with you on that one.
