At least one person is dead in a near 70-vehicle pileup along a Michigan highway, Fox affiliate WJBK-TV reported.

The Michigan State Police said several others have been injured in the pileup that occurred just before 10 a.m. Friday in severe snow conditions along I-94 near Galesburg.

Police estimate close to 70 vehicles are involved, according to the station. Authorities said dozens of vehicles are piled up in the westbound and eastbound lane in near white-out conditions.

Authorities said four semi trucks and two cars caught on fire. A three-mile radius was briefly evacuated due to a burning semi truck containing hazardous material. Another burning semi truck was carrying around 40 pounds of fireworks, the station reported.

Emergency responders and police are at the scene assisting drivers stranded in their vehicles.

Snow and ice-covered roads are blamed for numerous crashes around Michigan Friday and many schools across the state are closed. Another pileup involving 40 vehicles was reported outside of Ann Arbor along US-23.

John Rudolph, a truck driver from Ypsilanti who travels Michigan roads often, told the station Friday's weather conditions are "some of the worst" he has seen.

Interstate-94 is closed in both directions in Kalamazoo County, WJBK reported. The crash occurred outside of Galesburg, which is between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo.

Authorities estimate the interstate will be closed for at least another 12 hours.

Snow and ice are to blame? That is lamest accusation. It is stupid drivers that should blame at!

Amazes me that they don't rule speeding as factor which is very true. Speeding and snow/ice don't mix well. If the road is slippery, why speeding? It is pretty much common sense thing really. If everybody drives slower and accommodate the condition, these mess won't have to happen.

I was in Mich years ago and saw enough drivers speeding EVEN on icy roads. Scary!

I waited for it to stop snowing before I went out after seeing this on the news. We were getting white out here and I did not want to get wiped out.

If people driving slower there still would had been a pileup , you can't see in a
whiteout. Is would had wise if people listen to the weather report b/c there was a warning .

Some people don't have a choice. They have jobs that don't let them stay home in poor weather unless they use personal time. If they have children, they might not have any personal time for weather. My agency doesn't let people out early unless is an absolute must...so I've driven two hours in extremely bad weather, often doing only 5 miles an hour. I was almost taken out by a snow plow that dropped it's plow onto the road and damn near took out my car in the process because he didn't notice I was driving on his right. The plow was wide so it really takes up two lanes....

I know some people have to work in all kind of weathers ,I did as a health aide . We had to check up on our clients to made sure they had food and heat .
One of my client had no heat and if I had stay home she could gotten very sick or die . There are people who could had stay home and that the one I mean. We had health aides that refuses to go out in snow storms and that made more work for the health aides in the road we had to cover their clients too. I drove in an ice storm too , the one thing that upset me was that health aide did not get extra to risk their live, one woman was killed on the job .

Main reason I live in Florida....:aw:...no way could I drive in weather like that....

Ask yourself, which would be likely lead to pile up, some idiots driving 55 MPH, treated road as normal, OR EVERYBODY drives 15-20MPH?

Point is if everybody slows down, and when they see whiteout, they have better chance of avoiding getting into pileup as opposing with somebody driving 55 mph and realize white out... bam! dive into whiteout then smashing, and smashing and smashing and on. It goes on like crazy. Very similar happened near my home, it was Airport's fault. LOL.

This is not about whether stay home or go somewhere. I am not stopping anyone from going anywhere, this is about driving with reasonable speed on road condition being present. I have seen INSANE drivers speeding on slippery ice and expect that brakes will work regardless. Often when drivers have 4x4, they think 4x4 makes them immune to whatever road throws at them. 4x4 is NOT fool-proof, and have very little control over braking as opposed to greater control on acceleration. Other thing, when road is very slippery, these speed limit posters along road should be disregard and assume much less than that, but unfortunately people don't go by that but following the posted speed limits which is really stupid.

NYS thruway, often they banned 18 wheelers from exit #45 to #61, thats right east of where I live, toward to PA state line during winter weather conditions That is to prevent 18 wheelers from speeding and crash into something.

Or perhaps to avoid being blown over by the winds that come with the storms. I think most truck bans are wind related, not the condition of the roadway.

No, it is the weight of 18 wheelers that makes the difference, and they got trailer which can get jack-knifed. With excessive weight, it is impossible to stop fast, especially slapping on brakes on icy road... It is the weight that really does the most damage comparing to car which is pretty much lightweight and don't have anything in tow. Same concept with train, it takes forever for freight train to come to complete stop EVEN after crashing into vehicle.

You know most people do not use common sense when driving . I saw 3 people run red lights today , they had time to stop of it but the just drove right through it.

Yup, these people do not deserve to have drivers license if they kept doing such like that. I hate when people thinks they owns the road. Especially those who decided to park in middle of street and chatting with bystander instead of courtesy pull over to curb, thats my pet peeves, glad I see less of that happening which is good!

People do that in parking lots too stop to talk to someone right in middle of traffic and there is a not a lot of room to go around them. I was not near the people that ran the red lights. I worried about cars not stopping at intersection and that horrible accident I was in was 1995 . It really had a lasting affect on me that teenage that hit me should never been on the road.
