Did anyone go to one of ASL Dinner or DPHH (deaf perfessional happy hour) in your home states ??

Here in St Louis, I been went to ASL Dinner and ofc host for it. I was surprise that everyone were so exciting to go Illinois for ASL Dinner and asked me to hold about 22! I mean 22 people in small cute, sport bar restuant. I hope I could break them to other tables to be close with each others. That is 3rd time, with that large amount of people!

I am proud of that!

I have went to DPHH i believe once or twice. I really like it lot better than DAD club down here. However only bad thing is they set up different places in BOTH cities of Ft Worth and Dallas area... Sometimes I wouldnt go that far away but Havent went to any lately since lost my car

:thumb: This past March, at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, the Monday night ASL class director, hosted an ASL dinner. No one could use their voices, and only sign. I didn't go, but, when I asked the director Manny how the dinner went, he said it was the quietest dinner he ever hosted, and that the students wanted to do it again. So, hopefully they will plan something again in the near future. They had over 30 people which is good for the first time hosting this kind of dinner.

I normally go to DPHH in Texas. Its fun and see your old friends.

There is some sort of similar gathering happening next Thursday night here in Memphis at a local mall. Its called "silent dinner" and voices are not allowed. Only sign. I don't think I'm going to go, though.

I do go to San Diego's DPHH whenever it is hosted at a resturant/bar that doesn't enfore 21+ age restrictions. Two times so far I cannot go because of the age restriction policy. Most of local DPHHers are alcoholics so they get pissed if there is no sport/actual bar (most resturants do offer alcoholic drinks but that is not enough for them alochies) at the location or "happy hour" at a restusrant. YEESH.

Most of the DPHHers are snob too. But I hit it off with people who are from other cities/states. I love to go to DPHH. It was weird because one of the regular patrons for DPHH is the father of a classmate I grew up with in elementary so I never got over the fact that I am hanging with a friend's dad at a bar scene!~

After talking with my teacher tonight, she insists I come. I'm almost tempted to use the word demanded. I'm not so sure though. I'm nervous. Because I'm still a beginner, I'm afraid it'll just end up me being there for a few minutes. Feeling uncomfortable then leaving. Anyone think I should? Yeah, it may be good to help me learn, but it would still put me in an odd feeling position.

shiva -- ok, i will check on that later

C34 -- well, we have treps here at asl dinner but they use their voice.... one friend tell me few dont use their voices so pretend they are deaf, too. it is able for you to turn it off for while.

no i haven't, but, in high school in my ASL class we had a deaf breakfast.
we couldn't voice just sign, but the bad thing about that idea was, we were too busy eating to talk. lol the teacher got pissed.

I have been to several silent dinners in the Atlanta area. I haven't been to one in a while now, because whenever I go there, I don't feel so welcoming.

As for DPHH, I have been to the one in Pittsburgh. No use for me go back, because I do not drink. :)

cental, if it is the same one I know that is held at Wolf Chase or Oak Square then I encourage you to try it. I have wanted to attend the one in Memphis when they started it few months ago. But they have it held on Thursdays (once a month) which is inconvenient for me. What I usually do when going to some in the Atlanta area, I walk around or sit farther away from where the crowds are to see how they are and make myself more relaxed before going over there. But what makes me feel comfortable is if I brought a friend with me in case they didn't speak to me.

I think you would get to meet some deaf people who went school at White Station or the oral school - many of them can speak pretty well.

Yes it is the one at Wolf Chase. I do plan on going, but I'm really nervous about it. We are, indeed, not allowed to use our voice. Not only am I going into a group where I know only maybe 1 or 2 people, but also only am beginning signer. Hopefully things will pan out well.

Interesting. I've received info from the dude whom I assume started the silent dinner - he didn't mention anything about voice not being allowed.

Don't worry, cental. You'll be fine in there. :)

Thanks. I'm hoping for a good turnout from other students from my ASL class, but I'm not betting on it. Only 1 other person said they were coming. I'll let you know how it went, though.

Well, I just got back from tonight's silent dinner. Everyone who told me to go was right. I had an amazing time. I felt a little intimidated by the fact I couldn't keep up with 99 percent of the conversations. I ended up getting in a very slow paced conversation with my teacher, and it was probably one of the most enjoyable times I've ever had. Really makes me realize how far I have to go, but it was a great learning experience and I can't wait to go back next month.
