My professor (Deaf) Nathie Marbury assigned my class different topics, I'm just posting mine on here to see if anyone had any feedback or opinions!

It's about "Artificial Insemination"

Would you do it if you could?

Do you think it is a good decision?

If you could pick, would have a Deaf or Hearing baby?

It's a very sensitive topic, but my professor really wants us to get involved with sensitive issues that most people are scared to discuss because it helps raise awareness about certain issues. She's a great teacher and has taught me a lot.

Thanks everyone, hope to see your opinions and thoughts on this. I would love my children no matter if Deaf or Hearing. My brother just had a son and I'm teaching him some sign language, it really helps develop their mental skills a lot better, a lot of people don't realize how helpful it is!

Have a great day!

You are blessed to have Nathie Marbury for your instructor.

I am a little confused about your topic question. "Artificial Insemination" and "would [you] have a Deaf or Hearing baby" seem to be two separate topics.

The recent issue of NAD magazine discussed related bioethics topics; that might provide you with some background material.

:D Thanks!

Thank you very much for the info!!

Basically in an article I read that a couple was specifically trying to breed Deaf children through artificial insemination, they were picking sperm from Deaf donors, they wanted their child to grow up in the same culture. They said they had no problem having a hearing child at all, they would love it the same, but they would also be happy with a Deaf child. It's hard for some people to grasp the concept of "why" they would want this, but also a lot of people do not know about the Deaf Culture and strong community.

Nathie is such a GREAT professor, very strict! and she picks on me a lot :) but I know it's for my own good and she wants me to do well, and I respect her so much for that and all that she's done for me.

Thanks again for your input! My paper is due tuesday, and I have to do a 10 minute presentation in sign next week. I got a few interviews from Deaf friends of mine, I just wanted to get a wider perspective and opinions from others around the world, and the internet is such a great place to get this kind of information, it connects us all at the drop of a dime! :)

Time for some sleep! Have a different ASL presentation tomorrow, gotta be refreshed!

Good Night

i happen to know NM and shes a VERY good teacher we were honored to have her for ASL studies in CSDF fremont and many of the varieties of presention she was also part of Deaf Way1 in Berkely California. Was glad to be part of the culture at the time as well :)

as for artifial insemition i'm all for it. as u see well eh.. being the lifestyle i chose i rather have that then nothing at all. ofc theres adoption but still in all aspects i LOVE children and yes i wld do the AI for this...

as for the topic Deaf or hearing, what god as put asunder let no man go forth ( i think that was the rigiht sentence unsure) anyway all the lines aside. weather my child's deaf or hearing i ll love him/her no matter what i'm not going to elimate things just because i want the perfect child no way! i want a healthy child yes but if he/ she is sick. this is part of life. and we are chosen to help guide them in the life thats desinted foir them....

ALOHA!

Just caught your msg, THANK YOU! I really appreciate your response! This is really good info and opinions. Yes the article I read was about a Lesbian couple that wanted to use AI to create a Deaf child, but the article wasn't a nice one because of the man who wrote it, very close minded! That's why I chose this topic because the article was really upsetting and I wanted something strong for my presentation that increases awareness, I am also a Gay male, and the only way I will have a child is the same as you, AI or adoption, and no matter what my child is gay, straight, deaf, hearing, I will love them just the way they are.

Thank you very much for your response! Have a great day/night (whatever time it is there LOL)

BTW!!

this is the link to the very disturbing article, it really :pissed: upset me that they are people still out there like this, however that is life. Not only was against the creation of Deaf babies, he is also against homosexuality. Just another battle for us, but we're strong and we keep moving on! :whip:

This REALLY got the conservatives going as I recall correctly. :fu:
My parents found the whole sittuion hilarous! And I mean in a world where we have rich people advertising in college alumni mags for designer egg donors, it IS pretty funny....I think it's awesome. I mean there are SO many dhh kids (as well as kids with other disabilties) who are abandoned emoitionally as well as in other ways by their parents....
Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal...I mean we've been primed to think of disabilty as limiting, but for all we know losing one sense might mean that the other senses are WICKED sharp! I know hearies say that my eyesight is DAMN sharp!

I don't support artificial insemination or donor eggs from third parties for any reasons. That's why it is a separate topic to me; but that is just my personal opinion. :)

I know that the other recent big controversy is early fetal testing for the "deafness" gene. The problem is, will hearing parents abort the deaf baby? Will Deaf parents abort the hearing baby? That is another hot topic.

I think if someone truly "must have" specifically a deaf child, there are already adoption, fostering, and mentoring opportunities that are not yet fulfilled.

is there an online posting of NAD anywhere?
This is the website for NAD. There is no website for the magazine.

You might be able to get a copy of the magazine from your college library. It is NADmag (April/May 2005 Vol 5, No 1)

The articles are:
"Genetics and Deaf People: How Inherited Factors Cause Deafness"

"Ethics And Genetics: How Does This Affect You?"

"The Deaf Community Faces Genetic Research"

Resources mentioned in the articles:
Human Genome Project www.genome.gov

Teresa Blankmeyer Burke
Gallaudet University
She is writing her doctoral dissertation on the ethics of using genetic technology to create deaf children

Kathleen S. Arnos, Ph.D.
