Actually, she did that, and, I've kept it.

So what's your name then?

How old are you?

How does having spina bifida affect your life? (Apart from being wheelchair bound.) My aunt has it and she took it in a horrible way and now she's just ususally .. spiteful I guess. She thinks the whole world's out to get her but for whatever reason she's got tons of friends.. online.. haha anyways. Sorry =X

My name is Shalace Marquette....I'm gonna keep my last name private, and I'm 36. As for the name, I really only object to my middle name. I think it's hideous.

Spina bifida has affected my life, but I don't really think about it. I guess you could say it has made me more attuned to the needs of others. I've gone through a lot, though. I've had more surgeries than most of you can ever dream of. I've been through hell, socially. Kids were cruel to me growing up. Somehow, I overcame that. I don't know how. To be honest, I have every reason in the world to be bitter and angry, but I'm not. I look at it as just something I had to go through.

I just know that there are worse thing in life than being "disabled".

Oceanbreeze,

What was your most embarrassing moment? :) I know, I know. Leave it to me to ask something like that, but eh, inquiring minds want to know.

By the way, do YOU own an orange feather duster?

My most embarrassing moment? Oh, geez...Well, I'll have to confer with Mommy on this one.

It's something she has yet to let me live down!

But, when i was ten, I shoved rocks up my nose, and when I tried to "blow them out", I couldn't.

Can we say "HELP?!?" I will spare you the rest of the details, but suffice it to say that I am now "rockless".

But, my Mother has yet to let me live that one down

As for your feather duster question.... No, I own a pink one.

Not to make it worse but there's a street here called Marquette Ave ;) I was only curious about your first and/or middle name, so I totally understand you wanting to keep your last name hush-hush.

That's good that you didnt really let it affect you too much. Not every one can do that, I applaud you!

Do you do any type of crafts? If you do multiple ones, whats your favorite?

Do you have a favorite semi-precious or precious stone?

I'm not much for crafts, but I like latch hook rugs. I used to do those when I was in the hospital recuperating from surgeries. I also like to play cards.

And, yes, my favorite stone is the opal. It's also my birthstone. :)

Sorry if I have to "bump" this up. Tonight I was searching for a few posts of mine concerning my daughter with the keyword "spina bifida" and I found this most recent post.

I have to say this totally caught me off guard and was "flying low under my radar" for a month, but I'm finally glad to see someone with spina bifida post here since my daughter was also born with spina bifida last year.

I've been posting here for about a year. :) If you want, you can use me as a vehicle for information. Please feel free to PM me, if you like. I'm pretty open about it, and would be glad to talk to you. :)

My biggest accomplishment to date is probably graduating HS.

And, helping others is what makes me feel the most proud (heart soar).

And, if I wanted to travel RIGHT NOW, where would I go?

Hmm...Well, I know I bitch about the NE's winters, but I really am aching to go home again; to Maryland. So, if I could travel right now, that's where I'd go. I'd go home again.

Fly

You have not answer my question.

I'm bumping this thread...

I'll start with this question...

(since I didn't see it when it was originally posted.. :giggle:)

I am unable to walk at all. However, I'm able to stand if I hold onto things. My ankles are very weak, though, so the time I actually can stand is limited. I'm good for 30 secs before I'll fatigue and start to fall. As for how tall I am, no clue. I have a dislocated hip, so measuring me is difficult. I do know that I'm under 5'0. I'd guesstimate my height at 4'6 to 4'9.

OK, your turn. Be nice and keep it clean. I'll ignore offensive questions.

Ocean.

Seeing that you also live in hurricane alley.

What was the most devastating hurricane that you been through.

Mine was "hurricane Charley"

And was your needs met during evacuation orders? During a hurricane warning?
Since the Keys have so MANY!

The most devestating hurricane I have been thru was Hurricane Georges back in 1998. It was also my "initiation" to hurricanes and hurricane season. I had been here all of two months when Georges hit the Keys.

I live with my parents, so my needs were taken care of. We utilize a special needs registry with the Emergency Management. Prior to hurricane season every year, you're supposed to register with them, and if you're not able to evacuate yourself, a specially equipped bus carries the special needs residences out of the Keys. If a major hurricane threatens the Keys, shelters are NOT open and residence are taken to the FIU campus in Miami.

However, I've always evacuated with my family. We arrange for handicapped accessible room and hang out until it's safe to return home.
