Arizona School for Deaf and Blind celebrates centennial | fox11az.com Tucson
The Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind kicked off their 100 year celebration Tuesday.
Some 300 students from the Tucson and Phoenix campuses participated in the opening ceremonies.
The first school building was right on the U of A campus at Park Avenue and East Second Street.
As part of Tuesday's celebration, the students walked from the old school building to their current location on Speedway.
"It's 100 years of amazing success among our students and our faculty, " said ASDB Asst. Superintendent Nancy Amann through interpreter Yvonne Berlanga.
"Here I am going to a school that has been her for 100 years, you know," said ASDB student Chris Escarrega. "It's something that's close to me since I have been here so long."
The first class for the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind was in October in 1912 and there were only 19 students.
The school now serves over 2300 students and there are plans for celebrations throughout the year.
