Are you the only or the first deaf person in ur entire family?

I am the only deaf in the family.

My parents are late-deafened. I've been deaf since I was toddler due to Spinal Menigitis. A lot of my ancestors became late-deafened when they were in their 50's. All my departed grandparents became deaf in their 60's.

i have a couple distant cousins (3rd or 4th?) who are deaf. i've only met one of them briefly. my mother, her sister, and i are all hoh. i have a younger cousin (2nd) who is deaf from ear infections as an infant. her mother doesn't want her to sign, only talk. :(

i don't know what it's all about, but we're all women, and all related through the female side only. thanks, goddess.

No I'm not the only one. My sister has a small hearing loss and her son, my nephew is profoundly deaf. Our deafness is due to a genetic disorder that started with my father (although he wasn't deaf).

I'm one deaf in the family... I'm eldest of all hearing siblings...

Hmm.. hard to expl.. most relatives are deaf at late age (common for senior citizens) ... For right now I am only deaf in my family....found out my grandfather's brother was deaf due to spinal mengtisis (sp?) that has nothing to do w/ me.

Think I may be related to a deaf girl that i grew up at school... researching on that part to see if genetics has to do with it since we both have same last name. cool?

I have 3 other deaf cousins and my self. One of my deaf cousin dont sign at all but she goes to hearing school just like any normal hearing kid. Oh well my family believe that we should do more talking then to sign. So now one of my other cousin and I use sign alot. :P to my family. LOL

I am third generic Deaf family. My grand-uncle and Dad are Deaf.

Hello,

Iam not deaf, only HOH, but feel like Iam in my own world. Seriously HOH
folks should be considered part of deaf comm.
I have no history of HOH or deafness in family. I truely don't think my family
REALLY knows what I go thru DAILY in hearing world. At 40, I still struggle,
and it is depressing ! But this site has helped me find a world I fit into !

I'm the only deaf member in my family and last 6 generations at least.

cause unknown

Tom I agree with you 1000%, I mean I'am 38 and the HOH people just don't know about societies and associations and groups with other HOH people and the hearing dealers and hospitals just really aren't interested in telling people.

So 90/95% of all HOH people grow up without knowing anybody else who's HOH or Deaf - and to make mattersworse is that they never experience when they're younger and have the chance to be a part of the Deaf Culture to see beyond their isolation and difference.

I could tell you the horror story's of what some agencies do and the complete crap I take from my parents at the age of 38. They treat me like I'am dumb and when I try to give my say it's bat out of hell or high water! If I died, they'd finally smile and breathe, they don't know how to deal or talk to me and they won't listen to a bleeping thing I have to say! They don't even see me as their daughter, and they're ashamed of me - and that's exactly how they talk to me every single day. If I was having a heart attack, they'd laugh and just walk out the door, seriously! And I'am just a normal person who isn't working at the moment, but because of that they talk to me like a Fuck** doorknob! I was volunterring as a Research Analyst for a Magazine, even at a University and it didn't mean squat's ass to anyone in my family, I've been told many many times I'am never going to be successful, and quite frankly they didn't let me go back to post-secondary years ago when my hearing was better because they just don't believe I can do anything. I only have a 65% loss and I talk normally!

I'm deaf, I have a cousin on my mom's side of the family have has a hearing loss. I also had a great great great great aunt that was deaf.
