Are deaf kids bullied/harrassed more frequently than hearing kids in mainstream?

You make it sound like i was questioning whether she was correct about the events that happened. I was asking if there could not have been another reason for the mix up. Like i said before, i thought there was a possibilty tha due to some bad experiences in the past it could have resulted in the clouding of judgement. I was purely throwing ideas out there. I'm not telling people that bullying isn't as bad as it used to be but when i say that i think times have changed, only to be told i'm wrong with that as an example, you can't blame me for being slightly skeptic.

Are you being purposely obtuse, or do you have that great a lack of understanding of what you say and the implications it carries? Asking if there could have been another reason is questioning whether she was correct in her interpretation. Now you are trying to state that her perception is clouded as a result of past experience. That is not only insensitive, but extremely rude when coming from an adolescent and directed at an adult. What makes you think that Bott is not perfectly capable of recognizing her own bias and not allowing it to get in the way of her judgement? She is deaf, and she suffers from vision loss. She is not stupid, and is more self aware than most people.

It is very easy to be skeptical when you have never had the experience you are questioning. Quite comfortable to sit back in your armchair, accepting the white male privilege that is yours by birth, and minimize the negative social consequences of having been born a bit different from the majority.

You have a lot of growing up to do.

Howag, you just keep digging your hole deeper. Less talk and more listening. Botti happens to be a very respected member of this community. I trust her perceptions. You haven't lived her life and it's not your place to question her perception.

ETA: Bott was assaulted in public yesterday. Please do not question her about this.

Botts was assaulted yesterday? I think I missed something.

Age-ism. Able-ism. Sexism. People have intersectional privileges. A man should know not to commandeer a woman in public. Apparently, the guy was drunk. I would have been very upset.

I don't dismiss the affect, I just choose to deal with it in a more positive way than sulking about it. I don't sit and complain about other people when I could be putting that energy into bettering my own life. Anything other than that does not make sense to me.

There is no difference between those who waste there time promoting bigotry and those who waste there time seeing nothing but bigotry, they are both equally wasting their time.

So, working to eradicate bigotry is a waste of time. I can see why you would have that attitude. You have not put a great deal of effort into eradicating your own.

I'm not trying to state that her perception IS clouded. I was simply suggesting that it was a POSSIBILITY when coming to a judgement about the motive of the restaurant.I also don't think she is stupid but like i said i was throwing ideas out.

Can you seriously blame me for thinking that times have moved on when i'm told they haven't just because they gave her the wrong meal twice. That doesn't prove that negative behaviour towards people with disabilities hasn't decreased, it just proves that it still exisits. I assure you i meant no offence by what i said.

It was completely unnecessary and out of line for you to even suggest it as a possibility. That is what you seem to be incapable of understanding.

Again, you are making assumptions from your position of privilege. That makes your assumption completely invalid. You would do well to read and learn before attempting to draw conclusions or suggest alternative explanations.

At the time I was slightly confused how i could be told i was wrong with that as an example, that is why i asked what i did.

Just out of interest what do you mean my position of "privilege"? Does having the ability to hear make me privileged in life?

Yes, it does. Your gender adds to that societal privilege, and your race adds to it again.

Really? You see hearing as a privilege? Why? I agree that we still live in a male dominated society but when did being Asian sudenly start being a privilege.

Sorry. Didn't realize you were Asian. I assumed you were Caucasion. So you can remove the "white", but the "male" and the "hearing" still stand as privileges. In fact, it is granted and you accept it without ever realizing it or recognizing it. That is the defining characteristic of receiving privilege. You never have to think about it. It is just available to you without effort or thought.

You know, it's like when my mum tells me that i should consider myself lucky that we have running water when there are people in Africa that don't. I don't consider myself lucky that i have running water. I consider the people in Africa who don't have running water UNlucky. Don't get me wrong i still appreciate what i have but i don't see why i should feel "priviliged" that i have what the majority of the world's population has (hearing) Don't you think a privilege stops being a special advantage, which is the definition of a privilege, when the playing field levels out?

"To the victor goes the spoils of war." And the right to write the history of that war.

The dominate group is the group that is privileged. Think of it as being born into money. You socialize with other people that have money. Go to events with people that have money. in essence your entire though process has been formed in that environment. One day you step out of that environment to the working class. You will probably be feeling pretty smug.

Hearing people are born hearing with a lifetime of being hearing. Never stopping to consider how the minority lives their lives. The Deaf are not deaf by choice, but by design. We are deaf and must therefore deal with a world that is not very accommodating to our communication needs. Some laws have helped in that regards, but the essence of how people behave and act towards the deaf has not. Those that are born to privilege do not worry or think about how we might need to communicate with you. This is because you never had to worry about this before. You are not deaf.

This is not to say that the hearing cannot understand. It's more that the hearing is unwilling to understand.

This is why we are always happy to have hearing folks join our web site to learn about our culture.

In the United States, the stereotype is that Asian people are smart and good at math. That's a much better stereotype than other groups have. It's a huge problem if you're Asian, you're not smart, and you can't live up to expectations.

Have you ever tried to get a job without being able to use a telephone? That's privilege right there. And that's for starters...

Yes, but is it not also the stereotype that Asians can't drive and have small penises? Kind of balances it out really.

Small penises are not investigated for employment, unless you were doing a porn shoot. However, if we were going to figure out semantics of the small penis thing... It's a statistical fact that Asians have small penis, not a stereotype.
