Are Deaf Child road signs embarrassing?

What is the normal driving protocol when one sees this sign?

If one honks their horn--isn't that defeating the purpose especially if the child is deaf and can't hear the horn? :giggle:

I think one has to flash their lights when going through......:hmm:

I have to check on that.

Per Washington State Law, if a driver goes through a residential/school zone that has the sign that states, "Deaf Child Area". The driver must be flashing their headlights for the deaf child to see.

I have a sticker on my mums car back window. it says LOOK OUT, that child may be deaf

Yep, its not aimed at me, its just to raise awareness of deaf children when people are driving in cars to be aware some children are deaf.

Never thought of them being embarassing. I never grew up with one so I dont know if I would be embarassed as a kid. Probably cuz I was very self consicous about my deafness growing up..so who knows?

I don't see why it would be considered embarrassing. What is embarrassing about being deaf?

I personally requested that one be put up in my neighborhood when my son was younger. There were many children in the neighborhood, and someone was always out riding bikes or playing ball or whatever. It cautioned anyone driving through the neighborhood that wasn't familiar with it to be cautious. It improved the safety for all the kids.

After all, it didn't say, the 7 year old boy with brown hair and green eyes that lives at the brick house on the corner is deaf, so watch out for him. It just said that there was a deaf child in the neighborhood. The people who lived close already knew who the deaf kid was. They also knew to watch for the numerous hearing kids playing in the neighborhood. The strangers didn't know which one he was, so they were more careful for all the kids.

I agree.. It is really no different than parents requesting a "Slow Children At Play" Sign...

That type of sign, is also requested by parents.

I don't think it is embarrassing, just that I don't know why it take a deaf sign for drivers to look out for kids. There are some kids who just don't think (especially if they have ADHD).

I don't see the purpose. People should be watching for kids rather they can hear, see, or not.

Some kids would just run across the street without looking anyway.
Exactly. Just because a kid is hearing doesn't mean he'll respond in a safe way to a horn honk. ANY child playing on or near a road is a potential hazard.

I would and have never let my kids play "in the street"...it's for vehicles, etc., not a "play area". Whenever I see kids in the middle of the street, I stop, get out, and tell them to get out of the street! Some parents really don't care. Kids need to stay in their yards, on the sidewalk or at the park.

I've seen kids, 1-2-3 yrs. old in the middle of the street playing!

It's up to the parents to enforce this upon their children. And several times, when driving thru a subdivision or an apt, complex and I see kids in the street, I find the office and tell them about it. Same thing for animals.

Parents should also teach their kids "how to cross the street", deaf or not. I remmy my youngest, at 6 yrs. old, would just "run across the street" without looking both ways....After a week of being grounded, and coming in to tell me his ball (or whatever) is across the street, and I would go out and retrieve it, he finally learned.

It's still a great idea to have the signs "Deaf Child at Play". It makes drivers more cautious! Forbidding ur child from "playing and crossing the street" could save his life. Keeping them close to home also.

yes i do! I love the way you put the boy's mind is like a happy time that examples as a butterfly.

keep up with your artwork.

butterfly is icon of deaf. It's true that butterfly don't hear but feel the vibrate from antenna

My street actually has no sidewalks either side. So any kids who bike or skate do it on the street.

Also I walk on the street and not in peoples yards until I get to the main street where sidewalks begin.

I can understand that...so even a sign that says "Caution, Kids at Play" would be better for ur neighborhood. Speed bumps also. But letting kids under 6 to play in the middle of the street, no way! There might be a bike park near you? Even a park, or a cul-de-sac would be a lot safer. Where I live, kids are not allowed to play in the streets, and if they want to play, we have a park for that purpose.

And parents should forewarn their children about the dangers of street play!

i had the sign up near my old home when i was kid and it was not embrassing and my parents didn't order that but a former neighbor did order for us
i remember see that everyday. i play outside with other kids all the time

the sign was put down after i moved away. it is not there anymore when i last time went to my old neighborhoood.

Cool. There used to have deaf stick on back of car here but I felt it's not right for us because it would put on target from the bad people to attack us without know.

There is a sign just like this near my home:

My first thought, when I saw it....if you cannot watch out for your child, and allow he/she to play near the road, there should also be a sign that says "Idiot Parenting this block".

That's no reason to be embarrass. When I moved to town from other town for my dad's new job and my school. I walked and saw sign said "Deaf Child Area" on my house's corner of sidewalk. I rode on a bike and playing with my old neighborhood across the street. I lived this area when I was 3 until 10 years old. I moved out to other new house. The sign put it down. It's important to protect the deaf children. My cousin's with CI. His grandparent's house still have sign "deaf child area" in rural. He is very active kid! The sign don't bother me at all.
