Apply for a job

Indeed, Dice, Monster are all good. Careerbuilder is also good- kind of.

Also, having a profile on LinkedIn is a good way to get attention- they also have job listings there. Good way to make contacts and connections too. Reminds me I need to tweak my resume there and on monster to push it back up to the top :).

I have been applying for several jobs...

Gallaudet University
Public schools
Maryland Dept of Ed
and
Federal Govt jobs.

One of my applications met all of the criteria for one of the federal govt jobs and was sent to the hiring dept. *crossing fingers*

For federal jobs, check USA Jobs and another site I like to use frequently....for the USA jobs, remember to select the jobs for the public. This other site lets you see public and current employee listings at the same time. It gives you a good overview...and I'm on them both regularly myself...

It depends what your seeking. A job or a career. I have a career. So it's a different affair then having a job.

My work is fairly specialized. Once you acquire your rankings in Tokyo through honbu dojo or JKF. Your already working, at an established dojo. what you need to do is keep training and teaching, clock your hours to your next called to rank exam. And keep taking and receiving your hits.
The longer your working in the industry more specialized you can meld your work time. Most will stay and teach kids or adults at the dojo, or when you have your ranks and hours and high senseies or shidoins to vouch for you open you own dojo if that's what your called to do.
Considering I prefer to be Mobil and constantly moving I always come back teach for 6 months then go off again. Travel teach private students, ect ect.
Your name and rank will be known on lists in the federation or other organizations. It's a pretty standard affair. If your ranks don't end in japan. Then in this field your limited In my opinion. But it's a really strict and traditional career path. Not for the faint of heart or those with a glass jaw.
For what it's worth

When I was working in the rat race, I was always checking on the company website for internal and external job posting to see if there is a way to move to another dept or up or see if there is a layoff/firing coming.

When I was looking for a job - it was difficult like everyone says.. I always get the feeling I was being passed over on resume if they see words like relay or they attempt to call relay number. I can clearly see it on my caller's ID. Come on folks -- you really think I am that stupid? I even changed number to my folks number under impression they would answer for me and pass message for me. When I return the call - they are always changing their tune.

Now I am self employed as handyman whenever I can.

I think alot of us are NOT looking for jobs because they are content with amount of money from SSA and SSA rules for working really sucks. Not helpful to become a part timer if possible. The twp amount is too low to be under radar and then when TWP is over the SGA is too tricky to when needing to work overtime when the employer needs you just for that one week or month.

Its even worse for those on SSI and never worked. You cant get ahead and there is no fallback.

Do you still qualify for Earned Income Credit as self employed? When you're an employee, you share that cost with your employer, with each of you paying a share of the FICA tax. When you're self-employed, though, you're stuck with the full full amount yourself.

I'm learning how to file taxes on self-employment and I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.

Anyone of you who apply for a job at this moment? For me, I am still looking around job available but very very limited in my office.

How about you??

how often do you check to find a job list??

:fruit:

You mean you want to transfer within the same place you work now....like a promotion?

Yes, self-employment has pros and cons.

Hubby and I are both self-employed. About one-third of our income goes to federal taxes, and another good chunk goes to state taxes and various business licenses, state and municipal.

Of course, keep track of all your legitimate business expenses that can be deducted from your gross income. It helps somewhat.

Is it optional for you to pay into Social Security?

No. Although it's called a "contribution."

Anyway, I'm on the receiving end of SS now. For having "contributed" so much it doesn't seem like I'm "receiving" so much. No cruises in the future for this retiree.

My father was self employed much of his life and depends on social security. We're the only people in our condo building that have cars more than ten years old. Everyone else has muscle cars and luxury cars....all that hard work sure doesn't amount to beans.....
