Anyone LOVE their school?

What is BI-BI mean?? I forget.

Bilingual and bicultural. They use ASL to teach English, and include Deaf culture in the curriculum.

Yeah I remember now. How did you know my school is bone BI-BI yaya?? LoL

That's interesting. I do miss my friends from my school. But I am not miss about what my old teachers and staffs done to me in past. I forgave them and forget about past. I haven't visit ISD for since 5 years now. I don't know if I am go to Class of 2000 Reunion. I haven't hear from my classmate about reunion.

I try to keep up on these things. I am always interested in which schools are using bi-bi programs.

There's also: Austine School for the Deaf, Florida School for the Deaf and Blind.
Generally, if mainstream sped is bad, then the special schools in that state tend to be outstanding.
Personally, I would totally pick a School for the Deaf over a mainstream (eg self contained classroom/magnet program) dealie.
Your boy is getting on to that age when social issues become a biggie.
Even hearing and nondisabled teens find jr high and high school hard socially.
My thinking is that if he's happy socially, he'll do better in school.

Well theyve revamped things and improved things. Which is good. Remember until very recently, Deaf ed was really bad b/c all the experts thought that we couldn't really learn. Also, ASL based insturcution seemed to be mostly for the kids who couldn't really achieve.

Yea, the bibi movement didnt occur until around 1993 with one or two Deaf schools adopting it and then since then, it has slowly spread around because so many schools are resistant to change.

Right now, PDSD (Phx Day School for the Deaf) is at war with the parents because the parents want a whole revamp and have it change to BiBi program but the adminstrators who are hearing are reluntant to change. It is a huge battle right now but I know the parents will win...

You said ISD is good school? NO! It used to be stink education in 80's and 90's! Now it's good education after I graduated.

I am sorry that it was bad before but right now, it is a whole lot better.

I attended to Indiana School for the Deaf. I never like this! I wish I would never attend to Deaf school in first place. It's too late for me. :( There wasn't my career for future. I really hate to live in the dorm! I got many warts from my B*TCH roommate gave me a warts on my hands. When I was in elementary school. All girls must get together in the shower. It's real disgusted! I got an extra warts on my feet. I was dying when I live in dorm. The cafeteria tasted TERRIBLE!!!! I had many health problem during deaf school. Like Warts, Virus, Flu, Sinus Infection and Mono. Someone post and said Indiana School for the deaf is good school. No! I was there for 7 years. I talked with my friends who graduated in 2006. She told me about education is still same as 90's. I heard there is such changing for education and sports. The students number were small! I was alike my class of 2000's number was 32 students. Which it's suck!

My Fiance thought my school were large. I told him no. It wasn't large. I told him about population number are small at my school. He said ohhh. His school students number about 12,000. I like it! I wish I would graduate from High School where my fiance goes to. Because there was my career for ceramics, many foreign languages, Arts, Fine arts, graphic design, many different. He love his school! I was alike he was lucky b**tard!

That's why I am not fans my school at all! I don't care what people think about me. I had a worst memories at ISD!

My high school number altogether was about 4,500 and it was just too overcrowded. I dont think the larger is better because the teachers are overwhelmed trying to meet all the students' needs and there is really no connection with the teachers because the teachers cant remember all of us. Maybe u have different needs but for me, a large student population was just too much for me because of limited access to communication with everyone. It really sucked and lunch lines were so long. Lunch was only 35 mins so by the time I got my food, there was like 5 to 10 mins left to eat. Overcrowded schools really do suck! My daughter is in 5th grade and her school is so overcrowded with 40 plus kids in each classroom. My daughter is not doing well in her math class cuz she is a slow learner in math but the teachers cant meet her needs since they have about 35 other kids to think of.

If I had to go back to school, I would choose a Deaf school. If the Deaf school didnt have certain classes, for sure I would demand to go to a nearby mainstreamed school for one or two classes. However, many Deaf schools are doing that now.

Did you find a school for your son? Hope you did find one. I used to attend Maryland School for the Deaf.. it's a great school. Everything you need as the tool of Total Communication and Education that teaches very high values of learning as well. Most important as a deaf person you feel worth it .

Maryland School for the Deaf is not a total communication program anymore. :)

Large number is not always better. Sure they have more subjects on offer, but some students falls through the crack.

Shel90, could your daughter go to a charter school? Or even MSD because I hear they accept hearing children now. If she goes to MSD then she'll have more help from the teachers.

My daughter is 11 years old...she is not going to adjust well to a change like that. She is happy at the school and doing well in all subjects except for math. She learns math best using tactile learning not auditoritally. My ex hubby, few other parents and I are fighting with the school about changing their approach. That's why my life has been so hectic in the last few weeks...been going to meetings. Not fun but it will be worth it.
