Hard to say. Most of the books give tips, but not a step by step direction. I learned Zen meditation many years ago at the local Zen Center. I didn't have to join or anything, but took classes and was taught their method of sitting meditation, and then I just went there to meditate. Now I just meditate at home. I do like this book and it meant a lot to me in the beginning, "
Zen Mind Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki. His autobiography is called "
Crooked Cucumber."

There are many sources and many forms of meditation practice. I would recommend going to your library and see what you can read there, under meditation, vs. spending $$$ at first.
The Buddhanet web site has a lot of good info for free. Also, there are numerous YouTube guided meditation videos also that are kind of nice, too.
