something to ponder - I do web programming as my side job. That's how it funds my motorcycle hobby and some little vacations. However - I do not have a website with portfolio nor business name. My work is solely based on word-of-mouth because my references were good enough to vouch for me. To put it crudely - refer to this post. Sometimes I do 1-2 quick jobs from any job site like craigslist or monster.com if I need a quick cash. Gotta love tech-illiterate idiots! Pay me just to put up a website with only 2-3 pages??? comical!
I don't need to advertise myself online because it costs time and money to advertise yourself. I'm not interested in working all nights and weekends for mere piddly $$$. I only take in one client at a time and my service is not cheap. I either charge by hour or package depending on negotiation with the client. Sometimes I do some pro bono work but I keep it very limited for 1 big reason - it costs me time that I could be making $$$ but I'm not that greedy. Just being practical.
for this year - I've done 2 pro bono works and 3 clients. Those 3 clients were enough to fund my motorcycle purchase and Las Vegas trip. I'm currently working on site for musical conductor via word-of-mouth and initially - he balked at my price. I gave him a friendly reminder of this. he finally agreed to my price which was enough to get x-mas gifts for my family.
I'm already working on 2 websites for myself but not diligently. I've got plenty of time. Those 2 sites will serve as my supplementary retirement fund because I plan on retiring by 35 years old i hope (well not completely retired but more like part-part-timer). I prefer to be a contractual consultant like before. My ideal living is to be on the road as contractual developer. Meaning - I will ride to wherever I like and stay at hotel/facility to work on site for client.
Life's just too damn short to waste your time at cubicle!
was thinking -
